Month: September 2007

  • We had people over for Brunch on Sunday and I stayed of my bike all day.  Here’s Mimi at the party.  She likes to sit in her own chair and wait for her Daddy to fix her a plate:

    IMG_1480

After everybody left Mr. Poe and I took Rufus for a walk in the Castro.  The weather was fabulous.  Here are Rufus and I in front of a restaurant that Mr. Poe want to eat at.  He wants to go there because they have biscuits and gravy for brunch and Mr. Poe loves country gravy.  I think he’d put it in his coffee if I’d let him:

     IMG_1482

Then we headed home where I started going through the MOUNTAIN of pictures I’ve taken over the last year or so and Mr. Poe tried his bed to make our back yard more play friendly for Rufus.  He can now run around a bit more and dig a bit less.  Total bike mileage for the week: 202

  • Saturday, September 29

It’s already training ride leader again!  I’m so excited because I love being a TRL and have so much fun doing the rides.  I headed off to Sports Basement in the Presidio for the training ride session. Wilfredo was already there and looks a little more awake then me:

    IMG_1401

There were three groups milling about the Sports Basement on Saturday.  Us, some boating groups (more on them later) and a rally against suicide.  Did they choose the to stage the anti-suicide rally in the shadow of the Golden Gate Bridge, a notorious suicide venue on purpose?  Let’s hope they aren’t going to be staging the anti-drug rally at the corner of Goden Gate and Jones in the tenderloin….

    IMG_1403

The lovely and talented  Julie Brown will be managing the training ride leaders this year.  Which I think is a terrific thing because I know her and I think she’s doing a great job.

This is Susan Parish under the hat:

    IMG_1408

These are the guys from Mike’s Bikes who came out to show us some technical stuff.  How cute are they???  Answer:  so cute.  They showed us a lot of simple adjustments.  I’m more concerned with identifying damaged equipment because who wants to spend a half an hour fixing a chain only to find out that the chain took out the derailleur when it broke and that bike isn’t going anywhere.  Jeff is the one in the hat and he’s the manger of the Sausalito store and I’d already met him when I stopped with a rider during the ride I swept a couple of weeks a ago and I totally made him blush and I’m not going to elaborate on how but I will say that it started with him telling me that one of his coworkers has a really big wrench:

    IMG_1411

Wilfredo tried to get a picture of me petting the dog but the dog was sick of the paparrazzi and took off leaving me looking like I’m doing some kind of jig.  Because I am the last of the red hot cloggers:

    IMG_1412

The dog couldn’t evade me and my camera forever.  She’s with the people who were out on the boats, but she doesn’t get to go:

    IMG_1417

    IMG_1420

I took a lot of airplane pics over the course of the day but this is the ONLY one that turned out.  It’s practising for Fleet Week:

    IMG_1421

The boats have to be meticulously cleaned when they come in because of the corrosive properties of salt water.  The guy in the red shorts is taking no chances and he’s hosing out his junk as well.  And he continued to do so for a very, very long time.  Shouldn’t he take that hose out for dinner or something??

    IMG_1422

When they’re clean, the boats are stacked up for storage:

This is a shot of one of the big cargo ships coming in under the bridge:

Here we are towards to end of the session:

    IMG_1426

It broke up about 2PM and I was ready for some biking.  I headed over the bridge and up into Marin Headlands.  I got some great shots of the bridge and the city from halfway up:

    Even Oakland!

    IMG_1431

And one with me in it too:

    IMG_1433

This is the view from the very top looking South.  You can see how high up I am:

    IMG_1435

And then I started to descend.  I stopped about halfway down to take some pics of Point Bonita:

    IMG_1436

    IMG_1437

    IMG_1439

These are some fishing boats that were just offshore:

    IMG_1438

I headed down to Rodeo Beach to look at the surfers.  The sea was pretty calm but I managed to get a couple of shots in anyway:

    IMG_1448

I headed up the canyon and went up Ike Turner Hill.  There was a coyote lounging in the shade about halfway up.  I asked some of the park rangers about her and they say that she’s too comfortable with humans and has been nipping at people so they’ve been shooting at her with paint balls which a more humane alternative to bullets.

    IMG_1454

The view from the top of Ike Turner Hill:

    IMG_1457

I headed back down towards the bridge.  I stopped and took a few more pictures:

    IMG_1458

    IMG_1459

I headed down Sausalito Lateral and into Fort Baker.  I stopped to take some pics of the Bay Bridge:

    IMG_1460

    IMG_1461

And a few of the city as well:

    IMG_1462

    Neat catamaran!:

    IMG_1464

This is the iconic view of the Golden Gate Bridge from underneath taken at Fort Baker:

    IMG_1466

They’re doing this major construction underneath the bridge and they’ve erected this enormous scaffold that wasn’t there the last time I visited Fort Baker:

I headed back over the bridge and then up to the Palace of the Legion of Honor and then down to Sutro Gardens.  I stopped at 48th and Sutro Heights to take these shots of the North Windmill in Golden Gate Park:

    IMG_1473

    IMG_1474

Then I headed home Lawton to 20th Ave to Kirkham to 10th Ave to Judah into Parnassus to Cole to Carmel to Clayton to Corbett and home.  Mr. Poe and I took Rufus to the park where he ran around and had lots of fun.  One of my favorite things about Rufus is that he doesn’t listen to Jeff at all.  Because that drives him crazy:

    IMG_1478

    IMG_1479

Then I walked the dogs and went to bed early.  Total bike mileage:  37.1

  •  Friday, September 28

It was cool when I headed off and I wasn’t feeling very well so I took an easier ride without a lot of hills.  You know, for me.  I rode Corbett to Portola to Woodside to Dewey to Taravel and then down to the coast.  Then I came up into Golden Gate Park and rode around there and came out at the Rose Garden.  I then rode 11th to Lake to Arguello and into the Presidio.  I came out the Lombard Gate and rode Greenwich to Polk to Broadway and then through the Broadway tunnel.  Which is scary.  Because all those people who live in Pacific Heights are in a big big hurry to go somewhere and do not like to see a bicycle in their tunnel at all even though it’s a bike route.  You can even see the bike route sign in this picture of the Polk side of the tunnel:

The scariest part of the tunnel is the first half because by the second half you’re going downhill and about the same speed as the cars so it isn’t as big of an issue.

    IMG_1370

Don’t I look delighted to have made it through alive??

    IMG_1367

I continued down Broadway to Columbus and then into work.  I got this pic coming back from lunch.  Its the view down Sansome from Market.  The sun was starting to come out:

    IMG_1372

After work I headed out Columbus into Fisherman’s Wharf.  I got a shot of this British Airways 747-400 heading for Heathrow:

    IMG_1375

I went to the  Municipal Pier in Fisherman’s Wharf and took a few pics of the city from there:

    IMG_1384

I’ve photographed this ship before but never from so close up.  It’s so cool looking!  I don’t know anything else about it:

    IMG_1380

    IMG_1383

I headed over into Fort Mason where they were getting ready for a Jazz Festival.  The dogs  of Fort Mason just wanted to know what food they were serving:

    IMG_1386

I headed over to Crissy Field where I got some shots of the fog rolling in over the Golden Gate Bridge:

    IMG_1388

    IMG_1389

    IMG_1391

I rode around in the Presidio for a while.  Some of the buildings are really neat.  These are cool in a run down kind of way.  This one seems a little southern with the verandahs.

    IMG_1393

    IMG_1394

    IMG_1395

    IMG_1398

I came out of the Presidio at 15th ave and rode 15th to Fulton and into Golden Gate Park.  I came out of the park at Kezar Stadium.  The fog hadn’t reached to Haight yet and the buildings looked really beautiful against the setting sun:

    IMG_1399

I continued on Frederick to Cole to Carmel to Clayton to Corbett and then home.  Total bike mileage 34.4

  • I headed off after work up Columbus into North Beach and then through Fisherman’s Wharf and into Fort Mason.  I got this great picture of the fog rolling into the North Bay with Fort Mason in the foreground:

    IMG_1354

I continued through Fort Mason into the Marina.  I rode around the Marina a bit and
went into the Presidio at the Lombard Gate and then came out at the
Presidio Gate. I went Presidio to Washington to Maple to Parker and up onto Lone Mountain.  I got these shots of Saint Ignatius from Parker Street:

    IMG_1355

    IMG_1356   IMG_1357

I took Parker to McAllister to Arguello and into Golden Gate Park.  I went to the Music Concourse where the exterior of the new California Academy of Science building looks nearly complete:

    IMG_1360

    IMG_1362

Here’s a sculpure of Junipero Serra.  And here I thought he was just a street:

    IMG_1361

     And one of me:

    IMG_1363

I rode through park and exited at Kezar stadium and headed down Frederick.  I love this building!  I think it’s a gym and there’s another building a few doors down that’s almost completely identical.  Love it!

    IMG_1364

    Check out the detail!

    IMG_1365

I continued Frederick to 2nd to Carl to Shraeder to Carmel to Clayton to Corbett and then home.  Jeff was at class so I had a little dinner and took the dogs for a long walk.  Total bike mileage:  32.6

  • Thursday, September 26

It was a little cooler this morning but still gorgeous at my house.  I rode Corbett to Portola to Woodside to Dewey to Taravel and then headed down to the coast.  I got a shot of the moon from Taravel at about 16th Ave on the crisp, clear morning.

Once I crossed 19th Ave it started getting a little foggy and by the time I got to the coast it was incredibly foggy.  I rode up the Great Highway to Geary and then up to the Palace of the Legion of Honor.  It looks a little spooky shrouded in mist:

    .

And me in front of it:

This is the view East of the rising sun slowly burning off the fog:

I continued down to Lake and went Lake to Arguello to California to Jordan to Euclid to Presidio to Post and into the Financial District.

  • The weather was gorgeous in the morning.  I forgot my camera so no pics of my AM ride.  I rode Corbett to Clayton to Frederick to Parnassus into Judah and then followed that to the ocean.  I rode up the Great Highway to Geary up to the Palace of the Legion of Honor and then down into the Presidio.  I came out of the Presidio in the Marina and then went over Fort Mason and up Columbus into work.

The weather was so nice after work that I skipped my class so I could go riding.  I headed up Columbus into Fisherman’s Wharf and then up over Fort Mason into the Marina.  I followed Marina Blvd into the Presidio.  I took these pics from Crissy Field:

    IMG_1334

    Silly birds:

    IMG_1335

That’s Alcatraz island in the background:

    IMG_1336

    IMG_1338

    737 taking off for somewhere:

    IMG_1339

I headed up into the Presidio and got on Lincoln Blvd.  I stopped at Immigrant Point to take some pics. It was realy pretty there:

    IMG_1340

    IMG_1341

    IMG_1343

I ran into my pal Dave Glidden as I was leaving Immigrant Point.  We rode through the Presidio and came out at the 15th Ave gate by the spooky abandoned hospital.  I stopped and got some pics of some stunt pilots getting ready for Fleet Week:

    IMG_1344

    IMG_1345

We took 15th Ave to Fulton into Golden Gate Park at the Rose Garden.  We came out at 9th Ave.  Doesn’t Dave look delighted to almost be home??

    IMG_1346

Dave went home and I took Judah into Parnassus to Clayton to 17th and then home.  Jeff had a meeting so I had a little dinner and then took the dogs for a long walk.  Mimi was so tired when we got back that she fell asleep on the wood floor in the middle of the bed room.  I felt the same way.  Total bike mileage: 33.7

  • I headed off after work up Colubus into Fisherman’s wharf and then over Fort Mason into The Marina.  I took Laguna to Union.  This is the view looking up Laguna–  fabulous:

    IMG_1322

I took Union to Lyon.  This is the view looking south up Lyon at Pacific Heights:

    IMG_1323

And me with the bay behind me.

    IMG_1324

I turned up Lyon and then headed back on Green.  This is one of the many fabulous houses on Green St:

    IMG_1325

I turned on Divisidero and climbed up to the top of the hill.  That’s a lot of climbing.  This house(I think) is at Divisadero at Broadway:

    IMG_1327

I took Divisadero to Washington to Locust to Clay to Arguello to Lake and into Mountain Lake Park which looked gorgeous as usual:

    IMG_1329

Then I headed down 12th avenue to Funston into the Rose Garden and then through Golden Gate Park.  I exited into the Sunset at 9th ave and then took Judah which turns into Parnassus.  This is one of the many beautiful homes around UCSF on Parnassus:

    IMG_1333

I took Parnassus to Shrader to Carmel to Clayton to Corbett and then home.  Total bike mileage:  32.8

  • Tuesday, September 25

It was kind of cool this morning but clear and beautiful.  I headed up Corbett to Portola to Woodside to Dewey to Taravel and then down to the ocean.  It was gorgeous at the beach!

I headed up to Golden Gate Park and took MLK to Middle to JFK to the panhandle to Baker to Golden Gate to Larkin and then I took a few pics of our fabulous city hall:

And of course me enjoying it:

I took Larkin to O’Farrell to Grant to Bush to Sansome and then into work.

  • Monday, September 24

After work I headed out Sutter to Fillmore to Sacramento to Arguello to Lake.  I stopped by Mountain Lake which was pretty as always:

Then I headed up to Seacliff and then Clement up to 36th and then onto Shoreview Terrace.  Shoreview Terrace is a beautiful street between Geary and Clement, 36th and 38th.  It’s easy to miss and it doesn’t get a lot of traffic so it was quiet except for kids playing in the street.  It’s got great views of everything:

The houses are fabulous as well:

My favorite was shingled and finely detailed:

The view from 38th up to 36th:

Then I headed down to Cabrillo and then into Golden Gate Park.  I exited the park in the Haight and then rode Beulah to Cole to Parnassus to Clayton to 17th and then home.  Total bike mileage:  31.4

  • Monday, September 24

I don’t have a lot of pictures of Mimi on my blog, which is a terrible oversight.  Many people think that it’s because so many of the candid photos of my little lady could in fact be use against her in court because of her tendency towards sass of the violent kind.  While it may be true that her actions are the subject of several sealed UN indictments and she can’t visit Europe again because of them, you’d scarcely believe it by looking at her in the photos I took while we were waiting for the hot tub repairman today:

    Delight from any angle:

This is Rufus lounging on his favorite chair:

Rufus as The Thinker, Mimi as L’Eminence Grise.
