Month: April 2009

I was a little late getting out of the house this morning.  The dogs seemed dangerously underpetted and Mr. Poe was in a vastly better mood than last night.  I guess sleep will do that.  I headed off Corbett to Portola to Woodside to Dewey to Taravel and down to the coast.  I came down the Great Highway and stopped a little south of Sloat for pics of the beach and the unsettled weather:

I continued on the Great Highway to Skyline to Lake Merced to Winston to Moncada to Urbano to Pico to Ashton to De Montefort to Lee to Ocean to Phelan to Judson where it started raining on me to Foerster to Monterey to Diamond to Wilder to Arlington to Randall to San Jose to Duncan to Valencia where it started raining on me again to Market and into work.  I can report that my new commuter backpack has excellent waterproofing.  I can also report that I hate riding in the fucking rain.

It rained all morning but luckily stopped in time for me to go home for lunch.  Here is Day 7 of the Wisteria Watch:

After work I headed off Howard to 11th to Harrison to Precita to Mission to 29th to San Jose to Wilder to Diamond to Circular to Marston and into City College.  I came out on Phelan to Ocean to Lee to Holloway to Victoria.  This is the view looking north on Victoria.  The big orange and green building is a church these days but it used to be the El Rey Theatre:

These are some of the pretty homes on Victoria:

I continued on Victoria to Urbano to Corona to Urbano to Borica and into Entrada Court.  This big sun dial is in the middle of it:

I also saw a rainbow which made me think it was going to rain so I didn't linger:

I got back on Urbano to Moncada to Cerritos.  There are some pretty impressive homes on Cerritos.  These havc fabulous Ocean views when the weather is good:

    Storm moving in:

I continued on Cerritos to Ocean to Aptos to Darien to San Aleso to Monterey to Portola to Claremont to Dewey to Laguna Honda into 7th to Hugo to 3rd to Frederick to Stanyan to Haight to Buena Vista East to Upper Terrace to Roosevelt to 17th to Ord and home for dinner.  We got the rest of our Lifecycle reservations made.  Which put Mr. Poe in a mood because I'm making him pay for all of it.  Then I walked the dogs and we went to bed.

I managed to get up and out of the house on time which was nice.  I headed off Corbett to Portola to Woodside to Dewey to Pacheco and up onto Forest Hill.  Here are some of the gorgeous homes on Forest Hill:

I continued on Pacheco to Funston to Aerial to 14th.  I got a bunch of pics of the big storm we're getting today slowly sliding its way into the Bay Area:

    3

I continued on 14th to Aloha to Lomita to Lawton to 16th to Lawton.  This is the Holy Name Church.  It's really hard to get pics of because of all of the wires.  It's huge and it has an interesting design:

I'm not 100% behind this large sculpture of Christ in Mandorla.  It seems a little Broadway cast ensemble to me and Jesus looks a bit too much like Chrlton Heston circa 1960 or so:

I continued on Lawton to the Great Highway and then I went into Golden Gate Park at MLK and took it to Middle to Transverse to JFK to 8th to Lake to Arguello and into the Presidio.  I came out the Lombard Gate and took Chestnut to Laguna to Francisco to Polk to North Point to the Embarcadero to Washington.  This is the view from Washington and Davis of the Transamerica Pyramid and Maritime Plaza:

    Me:

I continued on Washington to Sansome and into work.  I beat the rain!

After work I headed off Sansome to Jackson to Davis to drop off my laundry and then Broadway to Stockton into Chinatown.  This pretty mural is on a school on Stockton:

    Stockton Steeet:

I continued on Stockton through the Stockton tunnel which is surprisingly bike friendly with sharrows and all to Sutter and then Fillmore to Sacramento to Arguello.  This is the site of a large construction project at Arguello and Geary.  I think it's gonna be big:

I continued on Arguello to Cabrillo to 8th and into Golden Gate Park and over to the Music Concourse.  I love the Japanese Tea Garden:

Here is yet another interesting angle to look at the De Young:

I got on MLK and headed out of the park on 9th.  This is the view up 9th:

I continued on 9th up into Forest Hill which has many beautiful homes on it:

I continued on 9th to 12 to Quintara to 14th.  This is the view from the top of the Quintara steps:

    Me:

This is the view down 14th looking south.

I came down 14th which is an incredibly steep hill and terrifying because you're kind of afraid that your bike is going to flip over if you brake too hard.  Eeeeeekkkkkk.  I took 14th to Vicente into Santa Clara.  This is the view down Santa Clara from Portola:

I continued on Santa Clara into Monterey to Diamond to Wilder to Arlington to Randall to San Jose to Duncan to Valencia to 18th to Eureka to 17th to Ord and home for dinner.  The Wisteria Watch continued with Day 6:

I had to work a little and then we went to bed early.

My 2009 bike mileage hit 3,000 today.  I'm really happy about that.

Sunday was my weekly Lifecycle Cat2 ride.  We headed out to Point Reyes Station through Samuel P Taylor Park and then came back through Nicasio.  People had a pretty good day although the all the rain we had this winter has definitely put a dent into everybody's training.

The funniest thing I saw all day was in Lagunitas.  Old timey car full of cantankerous dogs barking their heads off:

I was ahead of the group in the morning and went to point at the turn into Camp Taylor.  Me with big blond hair:

I didn't have to wait all that long before the last riders came through and then I followed them into Point Reyes Station for lunch.  The weather was war and ver, very sunny.

Here some pics of some of the riders at lunch:

    Buzz:

    Bob and Hunter:

We left Point Reyes Station and headed off to Nicasio.  The reservoir there is full and looked beautiful:

We trudged back over to San Francisco.  A few riders got picked up in Sausalito.  It took me a little longer to get home because I was helping this guy who had ridden down from Portland, Oregon find his way to the Mission and he had a lot of stuff and wasn't going to quickly.  I made it home about five.  It was a really long day but I had a lot of fun.

On Saturday I rode with Different Spokes.  We rode up Mount Tam through Alpine Dam.  It's a really tough ride but super fun and really pretty.  Here's the gang gathered at Peet's in the Castro before we left:

Michael and David and the Golden Gate Bridge:

    John and Dave:

    Will and Roger:

We regrouped in Fairfax and headed up to Alpine Dam Lake.  The reservoir is full!  They're actully releasing water which I haven't seen in a while:

    Alpine Dam Lake is gorgeous:

I arrived first followed by Will and then Jerome. Here's Jerome:

    Me:

    All of us:

Then we began the long climb up to the top of Mount Tam.  It was warm, sunny and generally gorgeous.  I was able to see into the ocean out as far as the Farallones which doesn't happen every day and was kind of a treat:

    The view from the top:

I headed down ahead of the others because I was hungry and had to make it home early.  I stopped by Cafe Del Soul for food.  They're wraps are wonderful and everything on the menu can be made vegan.  Score!  I hooked up with the rest of the group as we headed back to the bridge.

    John and Dave:

I documented Wisteria Watch - Day 4 when I got home.  Fabulous:

I got cleaned up and then we had people over for dinner.  Mr.Chris and David showed up and the Fangs and Alex.  Mr. Poe grilled steaks and we drank a bit of wine.

    Mr. Poe and Mr. Chris:

David and a mug shot looking Ashley:

    Alex:

You can see Mimi consenting to getting petted by Nathan in the background.

I was totally beat and was asleep soon after everybody left.

I documented Wisteria Watch - Day 3 while I was home for lunch.  It's very pretty now and almost gorgeous:

Mr. Poe was going to a movie with a friend after work so I went on a bit of longer ride.  I headed up to the Marin Headlands which I haven't done after work in a long time.  I headed off Columbus to North Point to Van Ness to Francisco to Franklin to Chestnut to Lyon and into the Presidio.  I took Lincoln to the Golden Gate Bridge and then up Conzelman.  The views of the bridge are spectacular:

I went to the top and then headed down where I got an equally jaw dropping view of Rodeo Beach:

    Me:

I climbed back up Ike Turner Hill and got a few more pics near the top:

And then I got a few more shots of the Golden Gate Bridge as I came back down Conzelman:

I came out of the Presidio at the 15th Ave gate and then took Lake to 8th and into Golden Gate Park and then JFK to the Panhandle and then Stanyan to Page to Scott to Duboce to Castro to 17th to Ord and home for dinner.  The dogs and I had dinner together and then Mr. Poe came home and we all went to bed.  Long day.

I managed to get up and out on time this morning!  Hooray!  I headed off Corbett to Portola to Woodside to Dewey to Taravel and down to the coast.  I came up the Great Highway and then got on Geary to 34th and up to the Palace of the Legion of Honor.  Fabulous:

The view looking east from the Palace of the Legion of Honor:

    Me:

I came down Camino Del Mar to Lake to 28th.  These are some of the gorgeous homes on 28th in Seacliff:

I continued on 28th to Camino Del Mar into Lincoln into the Presdio.  I headed over to Crissy Field and got some pics as I headed over to the Marina:

    3

Then I headed over to the Palace of Fine Arts.  They're still renovating it but it looks great:

I took North Point to Scott to Capra to Mallorca to Alhambra to Cervantes to Bay to Laguna to Francisco to Polk.  This is the glorious alhambra theatre on Polk.  Which is now a gym :(

    Great detail:

I continued on Polk to Vallejo to Jones to Pacific to Powell to Jackson to Columbus to Clay to Sansome and into work.

I documented Wisteria Watch 2009 Day 2 while I was home over lunch:

The Jasmine is also looking fabulous:

After work I headed off Sutter to Fillmore to Clay to Walnut to Washington.  This is the view north from Washington and Locust(I think):

I continued on Washington to Arguello to Cabrillo to 8th and into Golden Gate Park.  I got on JFK and took that to Bernice Rodgers to MLK to the Great Highway and down the coast.  Was it ever windy!  There were moving sand dunes and blowing sand at the beach and it was pretty unpleasant.  Here's a pic of the angry surf:

I continued on the Great Highway to Skyline to John Muir to Lake Merced to Brotherhood Way to Alemany to Trumbull to Mission to Valencia to 18th to Eureka to Ord and home.  Mr. Poe had to work late yet again so the dogs and I had dinner and then we went for a long walk.  Happily, Mr. Poe was home by the time we got done walking and we all went to bed.
