Month: August 2008

  • Friday, August 15

I got a late start this morning because my friend David was bringing over Rufus' favoritest pal Sofi to stay with us for the weekend while he and Chris are out of town.  Rufus loves Sofi so much.  Ashley doesn't know her as well but is well on his way to being 100% pro Sofi.  Mimi pretty much wants Sofi dead but that's her solution for everything.  Here's Sofi playing with the boys this morning:

When I finally got out of the house I took Corbett to Clayton to Carl to Cole to Waller to Stanyon and into Golden Gate Park at JFK.  I came out the Arguello Gate and took Arguello into the Presidio.  I came out of the Presidio at Lombard and then headed down Chestnut where I ran into my friend Nathan waiting at the Apple store for his precious unlocked IPhone.  He was visibily irritated that my greetings kept him from his prey:

I think he was cheered up in the store because the guy who helped him was totally tabtastic.  I continued down Chestnut to Laguna to Francisco to North Point where I saw this enormous cruise ship docked at the Embarcadero that seemed to dwarf North Beach:

I continued down North Point and got a picture closer up.  It doesn't look so big from close up:

    Me in North Beach:

I took North Point to the Embarcadero to Washington to Sansome and into work.

  • Thursday, August 14

I headed off after work Howard to 11th to Harrison to Mariposa to York.  York is another street in the Eastern Mission that I haven't spent a lot of time on and there's a lot to see:

    Dome great tenement style buildings:

The whole facade of this building is fabulous.  The big tree obscures most of it:

    .

I can't figure out what has been done to the first level of this building.  It's all wrong.  It's almost as itf it was assembled from other buildings:

How incredible is this mural.  So detailed and so vibrant:

    Cute little cottage:

    Cool industrial building:

I took York to 26th to Bryant to Precita.  How fabulous are the murals on this building??  The murals in the mission are amazing.  I've never seen anything quite like them anywhere:

I took Precita to Mission to 29th to San Jose to Wilder to Diamond to Monterey to Ridgewood to Flood to Hazelwood to Greenwood to Plymouth to Wildwood to Faxon to Holloway to Montecello to Estero to Lunado to Winston to Lake Merced to Skyline to the Great Highway where  I saw a big flock of birds heading south.  Summer is nearly over.

    Me on the Great Highway:

I took the Great Highway to Vicente to 18th to Taravel to Merced to Hernandez to Laguna Honda to Portola where I noted that the fog was incredibly thick.  Yuck:

I continued on Portola to Corbett to Ord and then home for dinner.

  • Thursday, August 14

It took me two hours to get out of the house this morning because certain dogs were being especially cuddly and I couldn't stop kissing them.n  When I did I headed off Corbett to Portola to Woodside where it was so foggy that I was really worried about visibility.  You couldn't see anything!  I continued on Woodside to Dewey to Taravel and down to the coast where I finally got underneath the fog.  I came up the Great Highway and went into Golden Gate Park at MLK.  I followed it to the Shakespeare Garden which was pretty and quiet in the morning light:

Me with the garden behind me.

I continued on MLK to Middle to Bowling Green to JFK to the Panhandle to Baker.  This fabulous school is on Baker at Hayes.  It's incredible.

I talked to the construction workers and apparently it's even cooler inside.  I like!  I took Hayes to Broderick to O'Farrell where I found some guys credit card on the street.  Dude's name was Mr. Whipple.  Seriously.  I continued on O'Farrell to Scott to Post and stopped to try to get a good pic of the enormous crane in Japantown:

I continued on Post and stopped at Union Square to get a shot of the enormous birthday sign for Macy.  I love the crazy big signs they've been putting up lately but, alas, this one isn't mostly David Beckham's crotch:

This is one of the Union Square buildings on Stockton Street with some great Deco styling:

I continued on Post to Kearny to Bush to Sansome and into work.  And Mr. Whipple can rest easily.  I dropped his credit card off at the branch on my way in.

  • Wednesday, August 13

I headed off after work Howard to 11th to Harrison to Mariposa to Florida.  I haven't spent a lot of time on Florida street and there are a number of notable structures on it.  In addition, the neighborhood is crawling with fags which leads me to believe that it is up and coming.  Which is a good thing for the architecture because Florida street has some of the oldest housing stock in the city and a lot of it in reasonably good condition:

I love this store at Florida and 24th.  Mexica-tessen.  I heart it.

These incredible murals are on the buildings of St. Peters Parish on Florida at 24th.  They're so gorgeous.  And vivid.  And vibrant.  Just incredible.

Muralists paining a new one a couple of doors down.  I wanted to talk to them but they were both totally sexy and I got suddenly shy.

Another building on 23th.  I couldn't get a good view of it but it's almost too vivid to process.

This is the Sunshine High School on Florida. Very fabulous.  The architecture is nice and tile work is fabulous:

I'm guessing this is a monkey??  There's a bunch of them on top of the building.  Pretty.

I continued on Florida to 26th.  This is the view looking down Mission towards Bernal Hill from 26th:

I continued on 26th to Dolores into San Jose to Wilder to Diamond to Monterey to Ridgewood to Flood to Hazelwood to Greenwood to Plymouth to Wildwood to Faxon to De Montefort to ashton to Pico to Urbano to Borica to Holloway to Lake Merced to Skyline to the Great Highway to Vicente to 18th to Taravel to Merced to Hernandez to Lagina Honda to Portole to Corbett to Ord and home for dinner.

    Bike Mileage:
    Today                                          40.8
    Week to date                             106.8

  • Wednesday, August 13

It was pretty clear at my house when I left this morning.  I headed off Corbett to Portola to Woodside and down to Dewey and it was very foggy there.  This is Laguna Honda looking North:

I took Dewey to Taravel and down to the coast.  I came up the Great Highway and then up to Point Lobos and then Geary to 34th and up to the Palace of the Legion of Honor.  Which was foggy and spooky looking:

Me with the Marin Headlands behind me.  Can't see them??

I took Camino Del Mar to Lake to Arguello to Clay to Fillmore to Post.  It was now bright sunshine.  Japantown looks cheerful as ever:

I continued on Post to Kearny to Bush to Sansome and into work.

  • Tuesday, August 12

I headed off after work Sutter to Fillmore to Clay to Walnut to Washington.  I stopped and took a pic of the fog rolling into the bay.  I think this is Spruce:

    Washington Street behind me:

I continued on Washington to Arguello to Cornwall to 4th to Anza.  This is a UCSF dorm at 6th and Anza.  It's a great Masonfy building with fantastic details.  For reference, every dorm I ever lived in was a horrible piece of 60's or 70's "let's see the ugliest thing we can build on the cheap" that made me wince whenever I entered the building.

I continued on Anza to 10th.  There are a bunch of nice houses on 10th. Here are some of them:

The arch on the facade of this is especially super fantastic.

I continued on 10th to Cabrillo to Funston and into Golden Gate Park at the Rose Garden.  Which looked pretty but didn't smell so good.  The whole area smelled strongly of mildew.  Maybe it's the crazy fog we've been having .  Maybe they should water less.

I got on JFK and headed over to Stow Lake which always looks pretty.  Especially the Chinese Pavilion:

I headed over to MLK down to the coast.  I took La Playa to the Great Highway to Kirkham to 6th to Judah to Cole to Carmel to Clayton to Corbett to Ord and home for dinner.

    Bike Mileage:
    Today                                          37.4
    Week to date                               66.0

  • Tuesday, August 12

I managed to drag my ass out of bed on time today which was nice because I've been having a lot of trouble getting back on schedule since I've been back from vacation.  When I opened the front door to leave I almost wished I'd stayed in bed because it was foggy.  Incredibly foggy.  I headed off Corbett to Portola to Evelyn to Juanita to Miraloma to Yerba Buena to Santa Paula to Santa Clara. This is the incredibly foggy view of Santa Clara at St. Francis:

I continued on Santa Clara to Monterey to Junipero Serra to Ocean to Clearfield into 34th to Yorba to 35th to Vicente and down to the coast.  I came up the Great Highway and stopped at the beach for pics:

I continued on the Great Highway to JFK which I followed to the Panhandle to Shrader to Grove to Ashbury to Fulton to Laguna to Golden Gate to Market to Sansome and into work.

  • Monday, August 11

I headed off after work Columbus to North Point to Van Ness to Francisco to Laguna to Chestnut to Lyon and into the Presidio.  I came around on Lincoln and it started getting very, very foggy in the Presidio.  I continued on Lincoln into Camino Del Mar and then up to the Palace of the Legion of Honor.  Which looked stately in the spooky fog:

    Joan of Arc:

Arty side view of the museum:

This is the back of the museum.  It seems to be such a Rococo departure from the stern classicism of the rest of the structure.  And it's all hidden in the back so most people probably don't know it's there.  Me likey:

I headed down to 34th to Balboa and down to the coast.  I went down the Great Highway and went into Golden Gate Park at JFK.  I took it to Spreckels Lake where I stopped for a pic:

    Me at the lake:

I continued on JFK to the Panhandle to Stanyon to Page to Scott to Market to 17th to Ord and then home for dinner.

    Bike Mileage:
    Today                                          28.6
    Week to date                               28.6

  • Monday, August 11

I wasn't feeling great this weekend so I stayed off the bike and
watched TV.  I'm having a hard time getting back on my riding
schedule.  Yes, it is hard to get up every morning at a quarter to
five.  Hard to believe!  I managed to drag my ass out of bed too late
for a long ride so I went as long as I could.  I took Diamond to 18th
to Harrison to 10th to Townsend.  This is the Showplace Square
neighborhood.  I think.  It's a bunch of design companies and high tech
stuff.  With a pretty Chinese looking thing in the square:

    The view down Townsend:

    I
continued on Townsend.  Lots of great brick warehouses the whole way
down.  The street is developing at a fever pace.  Because they can.
It's a lot easier to take a commercial building and redo it and resell
at as commercial or rezone it and put in lofts than it is to vacate a
single room occupancy hotel and renovate that which is why South of
Market gentrifies at a fever pace where the Tenderloin still gets the
    cracky shakes.

I took Townsend to the Embarcadero.  This is the Bay Bridge from just East of it.  Beautiful.

    I
continued on the Embaracadero and then made a U turn at Justin Herman
Plaza and then took Mission to Fremont to Front to Pine to Sansome and
    into work

  • Friday, August 8

I wasn't feeling very well on Friday so I just headed down Market into work and home again after work.  Mr Poe and I both had dentist appointments in the morning which put me in a sour mood.  Because I hate the dentist.  After we went to lunch at the Bloomingdale food court and then I got some comic books and headed back to work.

    Bike Mileage:
    Today                                           7.0
