Month: July 2008

  • Monday, July 7

I slept in again.  Luckily, Mr. Poe returns tonight so I can get back on my schedule.  It's getting hot in the city but I"m not complaining because at least it isn't wet.  After work I headed off Sansome to Jackson to Davis to drop off my laundry and then Broadway to Columbus to North Point to Van Ness to Francisco to Franklin to Chestnut to Lyon and into the Presidio.  I came around on Lincoln and then into Camino Del Mar in Seacliff.  Then I took 28th to McLaren. Where I saw this house.  I like as opposed to love it.  Mostly I like the entrance.  The rest of it is kind of a meh.

I continued on McLaren to 29th to Geary and then up to the big firehouse at Geary and 41st.  It was #47 when built, but it's #34 today.  It's a gorgeous brick building with some interesting additions in the back.  The salt air is decaying it quickly and it must be a nightmare to keep up

The decay on this stone work is pretty bad:

    Side view

Interesting modern addition that needs some work.  The metal is really rusted:

I continued on Geary to 48th to Sutro Heights.  I usually just focus on the view to the west from here.  I hadn't noticed these two glamorously detailed mansions that sit on cliff above over ocean beach.  The views they have must be incredible.  They're both in deplorable conditions.  It's like Sunset Boulevard the San Francisco edition.

The view down over Golden Gate Park

    And the glamorous North Pyramid.

    Me with view behind me:

I took Sutro Heights to 47th to Balboa to the Great Highway and then into Golden Gate Park at JFK to the Panhandle to Stanyon to Page to Broderick to Waller to Castro to 17th and then home.  The dogs had a lot of fun at the park and then Mr. Poe finally came home late at night.  Order has returned to the kingdom.  Huzzah!

  • Friday, July 4

Happy 4th of July!  I started my day with a bike ride with Different Spokes first to Mill Valley and then through Old Mill Park up Marion to Edgewood and then Sequoia Valley to Panorama and up to Pan Toll Station.  It was lots and lots of fun:

This dog was very social while she waited for her Mommy to get her coffee in Mill Valley.

    I think he was driving:

The boys at Pan Toll station:

The fog rolling in on the way down the mountain:

    Me with mountain:

I went to a barbecue at my friend Sandra's afterward and it was really fun.

  • Thursday, July 3

I slept in yet again and didn't do much riding in the morning other than come down Market into work.  After work I headed off 2nd to Howard to 11th to Harrison to 25th.  This is the view of the fog rolling in over Twin Peaks.  Spooky.

I took Treat to 26th.  This is the view looking at Bernal Hill from Treat (I think).  You can see the fog starting to spill over that as well:

I continued on 26th to Valencia to Tiffany to 29th to San Jose to Wilder to Diamond to Monterey to Ridgewood to Flood to Hazelwood to Greenwood to Northwood to Wildwood to Eastwood to Westwood to Faxon to De Montefort to Ashlton to Pico to Urbano to Moncado to Cerritos to Winston to Lake Merced to Skyline to the Great Highway and up the coast.  I went into Golden Gate Park at MLK and noted that the South Windmill didn't have the gate locked so I was free to mosey on in an observe the construction.  It looks to me like they've gutted the interior of the windmill base and they're laying a new foundation in it:

I also noted a large number of men sitting in cars in this area.  I'm pretty sure I know what they were waiting for and that's a major ewww.

I continued on MLK and stopped at the Shakespeare Garden.  It's not quite so tranquil since the new Academy of Sciences went up.  I'm interested to see how they are going to deal with it.  I think they should plant something that will grow tall and maintain the garden "room".  Stay tuned:

The plaque on the left was pried out by thieves, apparently for the metal value.  Which is a total shame.  It had been there a hundred years.

    Me in the garden:

    The same garden without me:

I took MLK to Middle to JFK into the Panhandle and then Page to Scott to Duboce and home.

  • Wednesday, July 2

I slept in this morning.  I haven't had a good nights sleep since Mr. Poe left and it's really starting to wear me out.  The dogs as well.  Mimi's snarls have lost their pep.

I got a flat on my commuter bike on my way home for lunch and had to walk it from Market and Castro.  Luckily, not too far.  When I got home I realized that all of my tubes were in my backpack back at work so I came back on my road bike and pledged to fix it that evening.

After work I headed off Sutter to Polk to Jackson to Gough to Washington.  These are the big mansions on Washington at Octavia.  This one's prettier and in better shape:

This one belongs to Danielle Steel.  It's a little crumbly.  She should do something about that.

I continued on Washington to Steiner to Clay to Cherry to Washington to Arguello to Lake to 23rd to Balboa and down to the coast.  I went down to the Great Highway and then into Golden Gate Park at JFK.  I followed it to the Panhandle and then took Stanyon to Page to Broderick.  This gorgeous Victorian is on Broderick:

    Lovely detail:

    Me on Broderick:

I took Broderick to Haight to Pierce to Waller to Steiner into Sanchez to Market.  The fog was rolling in and it was very thick except for the Castro:

I got home and took the boys to the park ,fed everybody dinner, folded laundry, cleaned the kitchen and then changed a flat on my commuter.  It was almost 10 by the time I got all that done.  Everybody was beat.  Especially me.

  • Tuesday, July 1

I ran home after work to go meet my brother who was driving up from Santa Cruz for dinner.  I gave him crappy directions and he got totally lost.  So, we had dinner with Mr. Chris and David because I figured he couldn't be mad at me with other people around.  So true.

  • Tuesday, July 1

Certain little dogs that shall go nameless didn't want to sleep last night and were crawling all over me and licking my face and got yelled at.  We'll call him Ashley P.  No, no let's call him A. Poodle.  I can't really blame him.  Nobody has slept well since Mr. Poe's been out of town.  Especially me.

I headed off Corbett to Portola to Woodside to Dewey to Taravel and down to the coast.  It was very foggy and soaking wet.  Lovely.  I came up the Great Highway and went into Golden Gate Park at MLK.  I followed it to the Panhandle and then took Baker to Fulton to Broderick where I stopped to take some pics of the stunning Victorians found there:

    Me in front of them:

I continued on Broderick to McAllister to Larkin to Bush.  I almost hit some pedestrians on Bush and Grant when my damp brakes refused to work at a light.  I massively apologized.  As well I should have.  I continued on Bush to Sansome and into work.

  • I slept in because I was a little worn out from all the pride festivities.  And by worn out I mean hung over.  I finally managed to get out of the house and rode Corbett to Clayton to Ashbury to Page to Market to Sansome and into work.

After work I headed off Sutter to Fillmore to Sacramento to Arguello to Lake to 23rd to Balboa and down to the coast.  The smoke is all gone and the ocean was especially sparkly.  I don't know how else to describe it but it was beautiful:

Me with the great highway behind me:

The beautiful North Windmill.  The South Windmill is under renovation but there hasn't been a lot of change to the exterior in a long time.  As far as I can tell, they've gutted the interior of the base and are laying a new foundation for the restored windmill which will be installed at a later date.  Stay tuned:

I went into Golden Gate Park at JFK and followed it into the panhandle.  Then I took Stanyon to Page to Central where I stopped to get pics of these jaw droppingly gorgeous Victorians.  I think there's five identical ones all in a row.  Stunning:

I continued on Central to Haight.  This is Buena Vista East from Haight Street:

And the gorgeous home across the street at Baker and Haight:

I continued on Haight to Scott to Duboce to Castro and into work.

I'm halfway through the year and well ahead of my mileage goal.  I don't think I'm going to have a lot of trouble hitting 10,000 miles.  I wonder how far I can take it??
