I had mixed feelings about the prop 8 ruling.  Mr. Poe and I continue to be married!  I’m happy about that but I wonder whether California bigots will try to screw us over via another ballot initiative.

I wasn’t very pleased with how hard walking around was for me on Monday so I headed out Tuesday afternoon to see if it was going to be any easier.  Mimi and I headed over to Corbett which has recently had all its electrical wires moved underground and it looks great:

The view looking south from Corbett:

There are a number of superfantastic victorians:

The Corwin Steps have been recently redone and look pretty good:

This pretty deli on 17th has been closed for a while.  To bad for people who lived near it.  The next closest one is quite a climb up:

Mimi wondering why we’re going so slow:

There’s a pretty green space on Saturn at Lower Terrace:

    The view south from Saturn:

The view west down the Saturn  Steps.

This walk would have taken me about 15 minutes prior to my accident.  It took me an hour on Tuesday.  But not to worry..  I’m going to get there.

Mr. Poe is back in town.  Thank God for that.  I holed myself up in the house the entire time he was gone as I tend to do but since I’m still working at home recovering from surgery I’ve taken xenophobic isolationism to the next level.  But Monday rolled around and we decided to go out.  Mr. Poe needs a new cell phone.  He’s been using his work phone for the last four years but he goes back to the classroom in the fall so he needed to get a new phone.  They couldn’t help us at Radio Shack in the Castro because they weren’t also selling us a phone.  I got him a Krazr from Cellular Blowout so all we needed was a sim card.  So we headed downtown on Muni.  I got a bunch of shots of Market Street:

    The glamorous Palomar Hotel:

    Fabulous detail:

    Westfield Center:

    Inside Westfield Center:

The AT&T store is a kiosk inside the Westfield Center.  I assumed that it was going to take a long time and be a total pain in the ass.  I was not disappointed.  There seems to be an intelligence ceiling for employees at that place.  But they finally got him set up and we headed home.  We took the N train and got off at Noe.  This is Duboce Park:

We headed down to Market where I ran into Russ and a few of his friends out and about.  Then I got a vegan cupcake and it was time to head home.  This is Mr. Poe at Bahgdad Cafe:

Me.  My hair is a complete nightmare at this point and it’s gonna be another month before I’m going to be able to go,   Not good.:

I was really sore and tired when I went home.  This is the most time I’ve spent on my feet since the accident and it wasn’t easy.  Standing seems to be a bigger issue than walking.  I’ve got a long way to go.

I managed to make it out of the house in the late afternoon with Mimi for a short walk.  We headed over to the Vulcan Steps so that I could take some pics.  It was very foggy which made the green gardens on the steps really pop:

    Corona Heights:

Such a beautiful cottage.  I wouldn’t want to live this far from the street.  I can’t even imagine how they deal with groceries:

    The view up the steps:

Mimi’s wondering why we’re going so slowly:

I need a haircut.  I look more bouffant-like every day:

Mr. Poe took me to Kaiser when he got home to pick up a prescription.  They’re putting me on something a lot weaker than what I’ve been using.  Which will likely mean I won’t need 12 hours of sleep a night anymore.  Things are looking up!

It was hot on Sunday!  But not too hot–  it was perfect.  It had me a little down because I wish I was out riding.  I’m keeping myself focused on being back on my bike.  It’s comforting.  I dragged Mr. Poe out to Diamond Heights and we hung out at Walter Haas Park.  Mr. Nick and I spent a lot of time up there back when I used to stay up past 8pm and we used to go on these epic evening walks all over the city.  I miss Mr. Nick and I miss the walks.  This park has beautiful views of the city:

    Collingwood Hill:

    Hello gorgeous!

The park also has great views south towards San Bruno Mountain:

I think this is Noe Valley:

Diamond Heights.  I guess my invitation to the birthday party was lost in the mail:

    Me.  Note Big Southern Hair:

I got a nice shot of Twin Peaks as we headed home:

The dogs were completely wiped out  by the heat.  My little Ashley Jr. is getting a little chubby:

Our friends Richard and Ron came up from the peninsula to visit us and they hung out with Mr. Poe while I worked on my homework for my class.  When I finished, Nathan and Daniel came over for dinner.  How adorable is Daniel?:

    Nathan is more geekilicious:

Mr. Poe’s got his pork chop face on.  Because they had pork chops for dinner:

Nathan is one of the few humans that Mimi tolerates:

They headed home about 7:30 and then I read comic books in bed for a while and then went to sleep.  Fun day!

I dragged my comic books out in an attempt to organize them.  I didn’t get very far.  I still have more comics than boxes.  I need to get a couple more before I can manage to get them into any kind of meaningful organization.  And then I need to catalog them.  Which is probably going to require a database (glee!).  Here they are:

I had hoped to get out of the house more, but Mr Poe was stuck getting his car worked on for most the day.  My friend Roger came over and we hung out on my front porch for the afternoon.  Very nice.   This is the second time he’s visited since my surgery.  He’s really awesome.

Mr. Poe was finally done with his car at 4:30 and we headed off for the comic book store on Ocean.  I noted that they moved the display case I knocked over which was probably a good decision.  I picked up my stuff and then we headed over to REI.  I had to pick up my University of New Mexico bike jersey.  Which is totally cute.  I also dropped off the stem from my new bike that had been swapped out in my bike fit.  I’m hoping they can use it when they redo Daddy’s old bike which is going to be here on Tuesday.  Mom had it shipped to REI and I’m going to get the work done on it even though I won’t be riding it until the fall (sigh).  I figured what the hell.  We took the long way home from REI over Potrero Hill and I got some pics.

    Converted warehouse on De Haro:

    Unfortunately shingled Victorian:

    Mr. Poe.  Hello gorgeous!

Super fantastic modern house.  Me likey:

    The view across the Mission:

The grass has already browned for the summer on Potrero Hill:

    The view down 23rd:

San Francisco General.  I like this building a lot more when I’m not a patient or picking somebody up:

    Swanky detail:

We came home through the Mission.  You know I love me some murals.  This one is “Il Immagrante”:

    Victorians on 23rd:

A Diego Rivera-esque mural on 18th and Dolores:

We went home and I managed to walk all three of the dogs, one at a time.   Rufus is hard to walk.  He knows I’m having a hard time getting around and he startes out really good but everything is sodarn interesting.  Thank god for pinch collars.

Today I finally got take a shower.  The first since my surgery.  I’ve been washing my hair in the sink and taking sponge baths since then.  It was totally awesome:

Here’s my injured leg.   You can see the welling is really going down.  Here’s an injury tip:  Leave your bandage on in the shower until the very end and then take it off and wash the wound right before you get out.  It’s much easier to get the tape off that way and the wound stings a lot less.

Mr. Poe and I took Mimi for a short walk after I got dressed.  Hello gorgeous!

Mr. Poe headed off to a movie with his friend Sharon and Mimi and I walked halfway up the Saturn steps.  The bay looked gorgeous:

Corona Heights as seen from Ord St,:

The famous Vulcan Steps.  One of my readers had noted that he’d lived in the city for years and years and never heard of either the Vulcan or the Saturn steps.  They’re so pretty.  The Saturn steps have a couple of seating areas that are golden for dates.

My shower has really perked me up.   Tomorrow Mr. Poe’s taking me to the comic store and then somewhere date-ish.  I can’t wait.

  • Thursday, May 14, 2009

Mr. Poe took me to the office to pick up a few things I’d left around noon.  I busted out my camera and took some pics on the way.

This is the intersection of 17th and Market.  They’re trying to turn the area into a pedestrian area.  The barriers are temporary because they want to see how it goes:

I got lots of pics as we headed down Gough:

Thiis is the view down Battery from Pacific:

    We headed home on California:

We headed home and then headed over to Kaiser for my doctor’s appointment. The news is mixed.  I’m healing up really well and he’s saying that if I do what they tell me I should achieve a pretty much full recovery.  The bad news is that it’s going to take a lot longer than I’d thought it was going to.  I won’t be on my bike for at least three months.  Which is obviously really disappointing.  But It’s going to be OK.

Here’s the doctor removing staples from my leg:.  Ewwwwwww:

    Freshly packed:

    Here’s my most recent xray:

Between being in a car on my pain meds and the doctor removing the staples from my leg I was very queasy when we left Kaiser.  I threw up on Castro St. on the way home.  Not by finest hour.

I’ve sent this and the note my doctor wrote to the lifecycle and I’m waiting for confirmation that they’re rolling my fundraising forward before I send a letter out to my donors. Sooooo disappointed that I’m not riding but it’s not like I have much of a choice.

Cabin fever struck again mid day and I took Mimi out for a couple of blocks with Mr. Poe.  Doesn’t he look handsome in his big boy clothes??

We walked halfway up the Saturn Steps which has a lovely view of the Mission and the bay:

    Me with Mimi:

This place is under renovation.  They’re taking it from total dump to not so much.  New windows are already in which makes me think that they’re doing it very quickly so they can flip it.  I’m not hopeful they’ll be more than partially fantastic when done.

    Beautiful view of the bay:

Gorgeous Victorian at the foot of the Vulcan steps.  AKA Pat and Ricks house.  They just renovated.  It looked great before.  Phenomenal now.

Mr. Poehad to work late so Mr. Chris, David, and Russ came over to keep me company.  I love it when they come over.

I’m feeling a lot better.  I can’t wait to see the doctor tomorrow.  It’s not like I’ll be back on my bike tomorrow but I would like to be able to bend my leg and, oh yes, shower.  I’d love to take a shower. Sponge bathing pretty much sucks.  Here I am in the living room:

Here’s my Rufus.  He’s such a good looking dog.

Yesterday I got a little of the cabin fever and so I took Mimi for a walk.  Just a couple of  blocks.  I walked down Ord Court to Ord Street and then down to the Saturn Steps and back.  I got some pics of my hood.

Looking up the famous Vulcan steps:

    Looking north on Ord Street:

    The view down Ord Court:

Mr. Poe’s garden is heavily in bloom:

Ashley is so naughty.  So, so naughty.  But you forgive him everything when he’s sleeping.  He’s perfect.  When asleep.

Mimi napping by the window.  Nursin’ is the hard work!

I’m planning on walking a little daily now so stay tuned for more pics of my neighborhood.

My house arrest continued.  I’m bored bored bored bored bored.  I miss my bike and I’m looking to getting back on it.  I’m seeing my doctor tomorrow and hopefully I’ll be healing up as desired.  I’m definitely feeling stronger.  I can keep my leg unelevated for longer periods without it swelling and that’s really nice because I’m not so stuck in the couch.  Not that the dogs mind that at all.  Mimi likes having me home so much I wouldn’t be surprised if it turned out that she engineered the accident.  She’s crafty that Mimi.  Here are the boys lounging on the back deck:

Mimi’s all “I’d like mah dinner now plz”

Me on my back deck reflected in the study window.  Arty:

I’m hoping my increased mobility will let me get out of the house more because, although we have a lovely home, I’m sick to death of it.  Stay tuned!
