Month: June 2008

  • Thursday, June 19

I headed off after work Market to Geary to Polk to Sutter to Fillmore to Sacramento to Arguello to Lake to 23rd to Balboa to the coast.  I stopped for a few pictures of the beautiful afternoon at the beach.

And one of me with Sutro Heights behind me:

I headed home through Golden Gate Park JFK into the Panhandle and then Stanyon to Page to Scott to Duboce to Castro and home.  Mr. Poe had managed to fall off of something he was standing on and has a nasty bump on his head and a couple bruises but no serious damage.  The dogs and I were very concerned and nobody slept well.

I was already pretty warm when I left for work this morning.  It's going to be a hot day.  I headed off Corbett to Portola to Woodside to Dewey to Taravel.  This is the view looking south towards Daly City and the Ocean from Taravel and Forest Side:

I continued on Taravel down to the coast and came up the Great Highway to Point Lobos to Alta Mar to Clement and up to the Palace of the Legion of Honor.  It was gorgeous up there.  Check out the golf course:

Me with part of the museum behind me:

    The glorious Marin Headlands:

I came down Camino Del Mar to Lake to Arguello to Clay to Fillmore to Pacific to Powell to Jackson.  I stopped at Jackson and Grant to get a pic of the Financial District with the Bay Bridge in the background:

I continued on Jackson to Columbus into Montgomerty to Clay to Sansome and into work.

  • Wednesday, June 18

It got pretty hot and was luxuriously warm when I left work.  I headed off Columbus to North Point to Van Ness to Francisco to Gough to Chestnut to Lyon and into the Presidio.  I came around on Lincoln and stopped a little west of the Golden Gate Bridge for a few pics.  The ocean looked spectacular:

    As did the bridge:

Me with the bridge behind me:

This is a view West towards the Richmond and Seacliff:

This is a closup of Seacliff.  Those houses do not look as enormous when viewed from the street:

I continued on Lincoln into Camino Del Mar to 28th to McLaren.  This is the view looking West from McLaren and 29th:

I took 29th to Lake and spied these handsome Mediterranean homes:

I continued on Lake to 30th to Clement to 23rd to Cabrillo to 8th into Golden Gate Park.  I took JFK to the Panhandle to Stanyon to Page to Duboce to Castro to 17th and then home.

We took the dogs to the park where everybody had a good time.  Then we had a quick dinner and Mr. Poe, Mimi and I went down to REI to get my commuter bike which had gotten it's shifter replaced and also a new wheel.  Vince at REI didn't have a lot of answers about how I could have two brake cables on two separate bikes fail and I'm not believing it was a coincidence.  I think I'll likely get both bikes recabled some time in the future with Shimano cables so at least I can say I did all I could.  While they were fixing the shifter , they also built me a new front wheel for $90 which is half what the one it's replacing cost and I like it a lot better.  The weight is about the same, but the rim is much more rigid which translates to much crisper braking.  I like.  I got the rear wheel built a couple of months ago and I'm crazy about it.  REI gets my stamp of approval for wheel construction.

  • Wednesday, June 18

It was a lot warmer than it's been all week this morning and I'm guessing it will be hot this afternoon.  I'll take it!  I headed off Corbett to Portola to Woodside to Dewey to Taravel and down to the coast.  I came up the Great Highway and went into Golden Gate Park at MLK.  I followed it to the Music Concourse to JFK to 8th to Lake to Arguello and into the Presidio.  I stopped at Inspiration Point for a few shots of the spectacular morning over the Marina:

I rode around the Presidio and came out the Lombard Gate and then took Chestnut to Octavia to Francisco to Polk to North Point to Columbus.  I stopped at Columbus and Broadway to capture the odd juxtaposion of super fantastic architecture and strip joints that is the hallmark of this part of North Beach:

And me also looking super fantastic:

I continued on Columbus to Clay to Sansome and into work.

  • Tuesday, June 17

When I was coming back from lunch I passed by City Hall to see if there was any excitement going on.  I'm pleased to report that there was none.  I'm not sure where all the protesters have gone but I saw nary a placard advising me of my hell bound status.  Maybe they had to meet with their parole officers.  I headed up Polk to Bush and headed back to work only to find that Bush Street had been commandeered by exuberant Italian soccer fans triumphantly celebrating the Italian soccer team's victory over France.  Take that, Frenchie!

After work I headed off Howard to 11th to Harrison to 23rd.  Trinity Presbyterian Church was built in 1892 and is all shades of fabulous:

I continued on 23rd where I encountered this Mural.  Which is really neat and very detailed.  How cool its this??

I continued on 23rd to Valencia to Tiffany to San Jose to Wilder to Diamond to Monterey to Ridgewood to Flood to Hazelwood to Greensood to Northwood to Wildwood to Faxon to De Montefort to Pico to Urbano to Moncado to Cerritos to Winston.  This is the view looking down Winston towards the ocean:

And the view back towards Ingleside Terrace:

The view south from the same vantage point:

And to view north of Balboa Terrace:

I continued on Winston to Lake Merced to Skyline to Ocean to Clearfield into 34th to Yorba to Crestlake to Wawona to 30th to Vicente to 17th to Taravel to Merced to Hernandez to Laguna Honda to Portola to Corbett and then home.

    Bike Mileage:
    Today                                         40.3
    Week to date                              65.5

  • Tuesday, June 17

It was definitely warmer this morning than yesterday.  I headed off Corbett to Portola to Fowler to Teresita to Gaviota to BellaVista to Burlwood to Los Palmos to Hazelwood to Yerba Buena to St. Elmo to Monterey to WestGate to Darien to San Fernando to Ocean to Eucalyptus to Lake Merced to Skyline to the Great Highway.  I came up the coast and went into Golden Gate Park at MLK and followed it to the Music Concourse and then to JFK to the Panhandle.  This is McLaren Lodge viewed from Stanyon and Oak:

And me at the same intersection:

I took the Panhandle to Central where I stopped for a few pics of the gorgeous Victorians.  The trees are so tall there it's hard to get a good shot:

I continued on Central to McAllister.  This is the backside of City Hall on Van Ness:

I turned on Polk and encountered a more pleasant gang than I'd seen the night before.  I guess the hate-filled protesters decided to sleep in a bit.  The Gay Men's Chorus was out and singing:

I see this guy all over town.  I have no idea who he is or what he's protesting.  There's an ad for an art gallery on the backside of his sign.  I can't tell whether he's a performance artist or whether they're trying to piggyback off of his lunacy.  Maybe a little bit of column A and a little bit of column B:

We're they at the wrong protest??  Or is their pink sign a sly way to support marriage equality without getting excommunicated?

    No protests here:

Pretty flowers in front of City Hall:

I continued on Polk to Market to Sansome and into work.

  • Monday, June 16

I headed off after work Market to Hayes to Polk to go to Civic Center to check out all the action at City Hall.  I was not disappointed:

    3

    Here comes the hate mobile:

I thought the circus at City Hall would make me happy or even triumphant but it kind of made me sad.  There's just so much hatred and the worst part about it is that they think that their behavior is somehow OK or even justified.  Like the guys in the "Hate Evil" t-shirts--  like hatred is OK so long as the thing you're hating is evil.  Given that those are also the people designating what falls into the evil category that pretty much gives him carte blanche for all the hatred he can spew.

Mr. Poe and I are planning to get married on August 19th, the 8th anniversary of our meeting,  at city hall.  I hope all of the protests have died down by then.

You know I couldn't resist checking out the sculpture while I was there:

Or noting that there's a Ming Exhibit at the Asian Art Museum:

I left civic center and rode Polk to Sutter to Octavia where I got a shot of this building which I think is part of Stuart Hall School but I could be wrong:

I continued on Octavia to Sacramento to Filllmore to Jackson to Arguello to Lake to 23rd to Balboa.  I stopped for a few shots of St. Thomas the Apostle.  It was cold and dark and I think that weather sets off the architecture nicely:

I continued on Balboa down to the Great Highway.  I stopped to take some pics of the kite surfers:

And one of me as well:

Seal Rocks against the cold, grey sky:

I turned off the Great Highway and went into Golden Gate Park at JFK.  I took it to the Panhandle and then Stanyon to Page to Scott to Duboce to Castro to 17th and then home.

    Bike Mileage:
    Today                                         25.2

  • Sunday, June 15

I was feeling a little out of shape so I did a long ride on Sunday.  China Camp then Lucas Valley then Marshall Wall then home through Olema and Samuel P Taylor State Park.  The weather was all over the place.  China Camp was gorgeous as ever:

    Me looking very, very tan:

Lucas Valley was hot.  Then I descended into Nicasio and headed for Hicks Valley.  There was a big brush fire on the Dolcini Dairy Farm on Friday and it looks pretty dramatic.  I hope that none of California's famous Happy Cows ended up barbecued:

    .

The Cheese factory was pretty and warm.  The pond level seems low.  Dry summer:

I got on Petaluma Marshall road and climbed to the top of the coastal mountains.  Where it was foggy and cold and you couldn't see too much.  At least it wasn't windy:

Then I rode down into Marshall and headed down Bolinas Bay.  The fog started to taper the farther south I went:

Close up of marina in above pic:

It was hot again by Olema and then through San Geronimo Valley and then Fairfax.  But I had my jacket back on by Sausalito.  Thank goodness for layers!

  • Friday, June 13

After work I headed off Market to Turk to Arguello to Cabrillo to Funston and into Golden Gate Park at the Rose Garden.  The weather had been pretty nice all week and everything was in bloom:

These lavender roses always seem to have such a tough time of it.  So pretty and so delicate:

    The de Young Museum:

I took JFK to Bernice Rodgers to the Great Highway and down the coast.  I turned up Vicente to 17th to Taravel to Merced to Hernandez to Laguna Honda and then stopped for a few pics at Saint Brendan the Navigators:

I think this roof is Mosaic as opposed to tile.  Which is kind of unusual I think:

    Saint Brendan looking very prow-like:

And one of me with Portola Street behind me.

I continued on Laguna Honda to Portola to Corbett and then home.

    Bike Mileage:
    Today                                         28.9

  • Friday, June 13

I headed off this morning up Corbett.  It started getting foggy when I hit Portola and there was very low visibility by the time I hit Woodside.  I continued Dewey to Taravel and then down to the coast.  This is the thick fog at Sunset and Taravel:

And me wishing I'd worn my leg warmers:

I continued on Taravel down to the coast and then came up the Great Highway.  I went into Golden Gate Park at MLK and then headed East.  This pond looked so pretty with the fog clinging to it:

I stopped at the Shakespeare Garden as well.  I haven't been there in a long time.  I'd forgotten where it was.  So pretty and quiet in the morning:

I continued on MLK to Middle to JFK and into the Panhandle.  Then I took Baker to McAllister to Polk to Bush to Sansome and into work.
