Month: May 2008

  • Friday, May 16

I headed home over lunch to drop of my bike.  It was roasting hot.  I found it necessary to shower to before heading back to work because of excess funk.  I left my bike at home and came back on muni as Mr. Poe and I had dinner plans.  After work I met him at Castro Nails for mani-pedi.  I got a dazzlingly bright shimmering yellow read from the OPI Hollywood collection called "No Autographs Please".  Then we went to Brandy Ho's for dinner.

It's still hot!  I'm already over it.  I headed off Corbett to Portola to Woodside to Dewey to Taravel and down to the coast.  I came up the Great Highway and stopped by the Cliff house for some pics of the beach.  So pretty on the warm, sunny morning:

and this is the Seal Rocks:

I continued up to Geary to 34th to the Palace of the Legion of Honor which, of course, looked fabulous:

Here's me in front of it:

    .

I came down Camino Del Mar to Lake to Arguello and into the Presidio.  I came out the Lombard Gate and then rode Chestnut to Laguna to Francisco to Polk to North Point to Battery to Sacramento to San Francisco and into work.

  • Thursday, May 15

I headed off after work Market to Turk.  This fabulous surrealistic mural is on Turk between Mason and Taylor.  It's very different than the murals in the Mission that emphasize community, vibrancy, and history.  These murals really seem to capture the chaotic, disjointed nature of the tenderloin and the hopelessness and dire straights of so many of the residents.  It all comes off like a bad acid trip and maybe it is.  It certainly can't be described as "inviting" and doesn't seem to depict a life you'd wish on your worst enemy.

I took Turk into Balboa to 5th to Cabrillo to 8th and into the park.  I took JFK to Bernice Rodgers to MLK to the Great Highway.  I came down the coast and stopped at the beach at the foot of Sloat which was jam packed with people enjoying the tail end of the unusually warm day:

I took Sloat to 47th to Wawona to 30th to Vicente to 18th to Taravel to Merced to Hernandez to Laguna Honda to Portola to Corbett and into work.

    Bike Mileage:
    Today                                     36.9
    Week to date                         149.1

  • Thursday, May 15

It was already hot when I woke up this morning.  It's going to be a long day.  The dogs are going to be hot and restless and so will I.

I headed off Corbett to Portola to Woodside to Dewey to Taravel and down to the coast.  I came up the Great Highway and there were surfers everywhere.  Sorry, didn't get any pics.  I went into Golden Gate Park at MLK and took it to the Music Concourse to JFK to 8th to Lake to Arguello to Clay to Walnut to Washington to Scott to Jackson to Buchanan where I saw yet another deco building in the Maya revival style.  This one is very similar to the one I photographed on Tuesday in the Marina but this is a little nicer and a little more richly decorated:

I continued on Buchanan to Washington where I got another shot of this gorgeous, crumbling mansion:

And one of me in front of it with Lafayette Park behind me:

I continued on Washington to Franklin where I saw this fabulous piece of Victorian liciousness:

This is the house next door to it.  It's a little earlier and not quite as nice and not in the greatest condition:

I continued on Franklin.  These buildings are on Jackson at Franklin:

I continued on Franklin to Pacific where I saw this great little building that must have been a firehouse at one time.  Love.  It.

I continued on Pacific to Powell to Jackson to Columbus to Clay to Sansome and into work.

  • Wednesday, May 14

It was in the seventies in San Francisco all afternoon.  Finally some warm weather. That I'm sure I'll be sick of in a day or two.

I headed off after work Columbus to North Point to Van Ness to Francisco to Gough to Chestnut to Lyon and into the Presidio. I came around on Lincoln and stopped west of the Golden Gate Bridge to take some pics.  This is a view down the cliffs to a viewing platform and the water:

This is a view back to the bridge from the same vantage point:

And one of me as well.  And not in my cutest jersey:

I continued on Lincoln into Camino Del Mar up to the Palace of the Legion of Honor and then down to 34th St to Anza to 48th to Sutro Heights where I got a great view looking south over the park:

I took Sutro Heights to 47th to Balboa to the Great Highway and into Golden Gate Park at JFK. I followed it to the Panhandle and then Stanyon to Frederick to Cole to Carmel to Clayton to Corbett and home.

    Bike Mileage:
    Today                                     38.4

  • Wednesday, May 14

I headed off Corbett to Portola to Fowler to Teresita to Isola To Rockdale to Sequoia to Bella Vista to Burlwood to Los Palmos to Hazelwood to Yerba Buena to St. Elmo.   stopped and took a pic of the imposing Chinese Consolate.  I love the house.  It's so fabulous looking.  I guess it's supposed to be Mediterranean and the front steps and the big dogs do not look original.  But it's got a big, fanulous lawn!  In San Francisco!  Imagine!

This is the house across the street that's a little more livable in scale and has a much more interesting garden:

And one of me as well:

I continued on St. Elmo to Monterey into Santa Clara into Vicente down to the coast.  I came up the Great Highway and then took MLK into Golden Gate Park to Bernice Rodgers to JFK to 8th to California into Cornwall to Arguello to Euclid to Presidio to Post to Kearny to Bush to Sansome and into work.  It's getting a lot warmer this week which I'm really excited about.  Stay tuned!

  • Tuesday, May 13

I headed off after work Columbus to North Point to Van Ness to Francisco to Gough to Chestnut.  This gorgeous building is on Chestnut, although it could probably use a little freshenin'.  It's of that great Maya revival style that was so popular in the 20's and 30's:

I continued on Chestnut to Lyon and into the Presidio.  I came around on Lincoln and then stopped at the Golden Gate Bridge to get a picture of Angel Island:

I headed over to Washington and stopped at Immigrant Point for some more pictures.  Perfection:

    Not so much:

I continued on Washington and then came out of the Presidio at the 15th Ave Gate and then took Lake to 23rd to Cabrillo and down to the coast and then I went into Golden Gate Park and took JFK to the Panhandle to Stanyon to Page to Scott to Haight.  There's a bunch of large Victorians on Haight Street that are begging to be bought up and restored and this is one of them:

I continued on Haight to Steiner into Sanchez to Market to 17th and then home.

    Bike Mileage:
    Today                                     37.4
    Week to date                          73.8

  • Tuesday, May 13

I headed off this morning Corbett to Portola to Woodside to Dewey to Pacheco up onto Forest Hill which was very pretty this morning.  I continued on Pacheco to Areal to Funston to Rockridge to Radio to 14th to 15th to Lawton and down to the coast.  I came up the Great Highway and went into Golden Gate Park at MLK and took it to the Music Concourse to JFK into the Panhandle.  This is the view towards the Haight from Baker and Oak:

And me at the same intersection:

There are some of the pretty Victorians on Oak at Baker:

I took Baker to Page to Laguna and remarked how much the neighborhood has improved since they ripped the freeway out.  It's amazing.  This is the Charles Dietle house.  It was built in 1884 by Henry Guilfuss and sold for a bag of gold after the earthquake in 1906 (source):

I continued down Laguna.  A number of buildings have been renovated in the last couple of years and they look spectacular.  I think this one is probably missing it's attic level:

This building has the attic and it looks spectacular!  I'm not as partial to the proportion of window to panel on the bay though.  I think the windows should be taller:

I continued on Laguna to Golden Gate to Market to Sansome and into work.

  • Monday, May 12

I headed off after work Sutter to Fillmore to Clay to Presidio to Washington.  This is the view looking down Walnut (I think) at a beautiful Arts and Crafts building or series of buildings:

I continued on Washington.  This is the view of two fabulous mansions on Washington that have a view of one another:

I continued on Washington to Arguello to Lake to 8th to Cabrillo to Funston and into Golden Gate Park at the Rose Garden.  Everything's in bloom!:

    As am I:

I rode down JFK to Chain of Lakes to MLK to the Great Highway to Pacheco to 41st to Rivera to 35th to Taravel to Merced to Hernandez to Laguna Honda to Portola to Corbett and home.  Mr. Poe was late getting home so he worked on dinner while I took the boys to the park.

    Week to date                          36.4

I was pretty beat so I slept in.  Until 6!  I'm a wild man.  I got a late start so I headed off Corbett to Portola to Woodside to Dewey to Taravel and down to the coast. I came up the Great Highway where I stopped and got a couple of pics of the gorgeous morning:

And one of me as well:

I continued up the Great Highway and went into Golden Gate Park at MLK.  I followed it to the Music Concourse to JFK to the Panhandle and then Baker to McAllister to Polk to Eddy to Cyril Magnin to Market to Sansome and into work.
