I headed out after work Columbus to North Point to Van Ness to Francisco to Gough to Chestnut to Lyon and into the Presidio.  I came around on Lincoln and got a fabulous late afternoon shot of the Marin Headlands:

And one of me with the bridge in the background:

And the view down from that vantage point.  Watch that last step!

I continued on Lincoln into Camino Del Mar and up to the Palace of the Legion of Honor where I stopped to take pics:

I came down to 34th Street where my shifter cable broke leaving my bike rideable but stuck in the hardest gear.  Not good.  I took 34th to Cabrillo to 30th and into Golden Gate Park and then JFK to Stanyon to stop at the closest bike shop to see if they could fix it.  They didn't have time to look at it and, in addition were pretty surly.  I won't be going back to American Cyclery anytime soon.  I called REI and nice Larry said they could look at it if I brought it down so I took Haight to Octavia to Page to Market to 8th to Brannon and into REI.  It turned out that when the cable broke, part of it got stuck in the shifter or damaged the shifter or something and he couldn't fix it because shifters aren't really designed to be openable anymore and he couldn't get in to see where it was stuck/damaged.  The good news is that the shifter is still under warranty but they're gonna have to order the part which is going to take a while.  I think I'll probably get a new front wheel while I'm at it because it's pretty old and needs to be swapped out.  I'm really liking the wheel they built for me last month and I'm hoping for more of the same.  I'm going to take it in on Sunday when I take my road bike in to get its fancy new brakes so I'm gonna be on my Kona bike all next week.  Which is kind of gonna suck.  I'm really determined to hit 5,000 miles by the end of the month and the clock is ticking.... Stay tuned!

I headed off in the morning Corbett to Portola to Fowler to Teresita to Isola to Rockdale to Omar to Sequoia to Bella Vista to Burlwood to Los Palmos to Hazelwood to Yerba Buena to Brentwood to Fernwood to El Verano into Northgate to Upland to San Benito to Ocean to Clearfield into 34th to Yorba to 35th to Vicente and down to the coast.  I came up the Great Highway and stopped for a few pics of the beach on the bright, sunny morning:

And one of me also looking bright and sunny:

I continued on the Great Highway and went into Golden Gate Park at MLK and took it the Music Concourse to JFK and into the Panhandle.  Then I took baker to McAllister to Larkin to Bush to Sansome and into work.

  • Wednesday, May 21

I noted that my knee was hurting a little bit in the AM so I decided to not go riding in the morning and instead I went back to bed after walking the dogs.  I hung around at the house waiting for a delivery and then headed down Market into work.  It was a good idea because my knee felt fine when I rode in the PM

After work I headed out Howard to 11th to Harrison.  I love Harrison Street in the Mission.  There's a lot of great architecture and it's not the greatest neighborhood and I love how great all Victorians are tossed in with new loft buildings and industrial stuff.  Here's one of the Victorians:

And the modern loft building next door to it:

A couple more Victorians with the strange triangular bays which are pretty unusual in the city and very geometrically pleasin':

I turned on 24th Street and noted these three identical Victorians on Capp Street.  It looks like there was a fourth one that somebody crapped up:

And then I saw this awesome mural on 24th at Lilac.  I love it.  Some might sniff that it looks like something that might be painted on a van but I'm not gonna be a snob about art.  It's vibrant.  It's exuberant.  It's got great movement to it.  It's another project by the Precita Eyes project and I just can't rave about them enough:

I continued on 24th to Valencia to Tiffany to 29th to San Jose to Wilder to Diamond to Monterey to Ridgewood to Hazelwood to Greenwood to Northwood to Wildwood to Faxon to Ocean to Cerritos.  This is me at Ocean and Cerritos with Westgate behind me:

I took Cerritos to into Winston to Lake Merced to Skyline to the Great Highway to Vicente to 17th to Taravel to Merced to Hernandez to Laguna Honda to Portola to Corbett and home.  I took the boys to the park where, once again, everybody marveled over Ashley's smart new summer haircut.  Then we went home and had dinner with Mr. Poe and went to bed.

I headed off after work Columbus to Powell to North Point to Van Ness to Francsico to Gough to Chestnut to Lyon and into the Presidio.  I came around on Lincoln and stopped at the National Military Cemetery which is in the process of getting gussied up for Memorial Day.  It's enormous.  You don't realize how large it is from Lincoln but it seems to go on forever.  Kind of like war:

I continued on Lincoln to Ralston to Washington and stopped at Immigrant Point to get a picture of the Marin Headlands in the fading light:

    Me at immigrant point:

I took Washington to Wedermeyer and out the 15th Ave gate.  Then I took Lake to 23rd to Balboa to the ocean and then down the Great Highway.  The beach looked gorgeous.  Note:  those are kite surfers not birds.  It's the coolest looking sport but one that I doubt I'd ever be coordinated enough to attempt:

I took the Great Highway to JFK and into Golden Gate Park.  I followed JFK to the Panhandle and then Stanyon to Page to Scott to Duboce to Castro to 17th and then home.  Mr. Poe had his Spanish final so I met Mr. David and Sofi, the world's sweetest dog, at the Park.  Rufus loves Sofi so much.  She's his favoritest.

It was really foggy this morning but not too cold.  Ah, summer.  I headed out Corbett to Portola to Woodside to Dewey to Taravel and down to the coast.  I came up the Great Highway and took Balboa into Turk.  I stopped at the University of San Francisco for a few shots of its spectacular stairway:

This is the view back towards the Richmond.  Not the prettiest morning:

    But I was still smiling:

I took Turk to Broderick to O'Farrell.   It's kind of slim pickins for pretty homes over there but there's a couple.  You just have to look for them.  Here's a couple of early 20th c examples:

And a couple of Victorian cottages:

I came down O'Farrell and saw this nice building between Divisadero and Scott:  Great detail on it but it could be in better condition:

I turned on Scott to Post to Kearny to Bush to Sansome and into work.

  • I headed off after work Sutter to Fillmore to Clay to Walnut to Washington to Arguello.  I stopped at Presidio Terrace for a few pics:

This is the former residence of Senator Dianne Feinstein.  She moved to a bigger place in Pacific Heights.  I like this place much better.  The roof has an interesting shingle design that is very artistic:

    The view up the street:

    And the glamorous entrance gate:

I took Arguello to Lake to 30th.  This beautiful home is at 30th and Sea View Terrace.  It has enormous rose bushes all around it.  They smell great too:

I continued on 30th to Clement to 34th to Balboa and down to the coast. I came down the Great Highway and stopped at the foot of Sloat for some pictures of the cold, angry looking Pacific:

I continued on the Great Highway to Skyline to Lake Merced to Middlefield to Eucalyptus into Ocean to San Fernando to Saint Francis to Santa Clara.  I think this house is on Santa Clara.  I think the black paint on the entrance is new and I'm not sure I love it.  It's very dramatic but I'm not convinced it's the best look for this building.  The portal has such great architecture and the paint highlights it without accentuating it's detail which is a mistake because it has such great detail:

I continued on Santa Clara to San Anselmo to Santa Paula to Portola to Corbett and home

  • Monday, May 19

I woke up this morning and had breakfast and then went back to bed for a couple of hours.  Then I got up, had breakfast again, and then trundled down Market Street on my bike into work.  I headed home over lunch and managed to get a few shots of the boys sporting their smart new summer haircuts.  Rufus looks very handsome and Ashley looks so much like Ashley Sr at the same age that it's a little jarring:

  • Sunday, May 18

Today was the last of the lifecycle training rides. Next week we're just going to Tiburon for lunch and it's only 17 miles so I not counting it.  It was a very, very long day.  I left the house at 5:30 AM and didn't get home until 7:30 PM.  Looong day.  But we had a lot of fun.  The weather was kind of all over the place with frigid cold in the morning followed by roasting hot then back to cold then back to hot.  I'm glad I bring a lot of layers because I was constantly changing all day.

Here's Kurt leading stretching.  I end up doing this if Kurt isn't around and I do a crappy, crappy job.  I don't really get the point of stretching in the morning when you're cold.  I think the best way to get going in the morning is to start off slowly and then stretch when you stop.  Which is probably why my morning stretches are so half assed.  But Kurt does an awesome job:

    And has everyone's attention:

The fog was terrible in the Presidio and the bridge was wet, cold, and unpleasant.  Regan lives in Mill Valley and promised up and down it wasn't like that in Marin and she was right.  Here's the view from Sausalito.  Hint:  you should be able to see the city:

We stopped in Fairfax.  Here's Regan, Courtney, and me.  The glamour:

And Courtney and Ben looking couplicious:

Here's Ben looking studly at Cheese Factory:

We climbed Marshall Wall which is a big, unpleasant climb.  Everybody made it and everybody seemed to have a pretty good day.  Here's the back of the pack halfway up the hill:

We made our way down to Bolinas Bay and then down to Point Reyes Station.  Everybody was pretty tired but we stopped for lunch for a while and that perked everybody up.  This is Sandra and Annette:

We headed back to San Francisco and didn't get in until very late.  Mr. Poe had done all the chores and had dinner waiting for me.  What a guy.

    Bike Mileage:

  • Saturday, May 17

We had to head over to Berkeley for an awards ceremony because Mr. Poe won something!  Here's a pic of the two of us together.  Yes I look very, very tan and pretty shiny.  Note to self:  always mattify before photo ops.
