I headed off after work Howard to 11th to Harrison to 20th.  These houses are on 20th between Harrison and Folsom.  They kind of have me scratching my head because I don’t think that they’ve gone through a bit of conversion.  I think they are originally single family residences from the 1870′s.  They’ve been jacked up and converted to flats.  The front doors are identical on both buildings even though the rest of the buildings are different.  I think the building on the right is later, and the assymetrical arrangement of the second floor windows leads me to believe that there’s something missing from the structure like a bay on the right side that was lopped off to make it fit into the lot.  Maybe these two buildings were moved to their present location and the front doors were constructed from construction scrap by the developers.  It’s hard to say which is why I find it so interesting:

I continued on 21st where I found this gorgeous building on the corner of South Van Ness.  Very well detailed and so nicely preserved:

I turned on South Van Ness where I saw this gorgeous Victorian house undergoing a lot of renovation.  The scaffolding looks terrifying.  Eek!

I turned on 21st where I saw this incredible mural.  It’s textured which adds to its fabulocity but doesn’t photograph well:

I continued on 21st and saw this beautiful place on the corner of Bartlett.  I love the Mission:

Across the street from it is this fantastic mural.  What’s not to like:

    It’s got such great movement:

I continued on 21st to Valencia to Tiffany to 28th to San Jose to Wilder to Diamond to Monterey to Ridgewood to Flood to Hazelwood to Greenwood to Wildwood to Faxon to De Montefort to Ashton to Pico to Urbano to Mocado to Cerritos to Mercedes.  This is the view from Mercedes at Junipero Serra looking West:

I continued on Mercedes into Winston to Lake Merced.  It was so pretty in the late afternoon sun:

I continued on Lake Merced to Skyline to the Great Highway.  This is the view from the Great Highway just south of the zoo:

Another shot from that vantage point:

I continued on the Great Highway to Taravel to Merced to Hernandez to Laguna Honda to Portola to Corbett and home.

I continued on Bella Vista to Burlwood to Los Palmos to Hazelwood to Yerba Buena to Saint Elmo to El Verano.  This Mediterranean house is at El Verano and Saint Elmo.  It’s really well detailed and in addition likely has both bay and ocean views:

I continued on El Verano into Northgate to Upland to San Benito to Ocean to Eucalyptus to Lake Merced.  I stopped to take some pics of the pretty lake:

I continued on Lake Merced to Skyline to the Great Highway and came up the coast and went into Golden Gate Park at MLK and then took Chain of Lakes to JFK to 8th to Lake to Arguello and into the Presidio.  I came out the Lombard Gate and then came up Chestnut.  The Moscone Recreation Center on Chestnut street seems to be nearing completion and it’s Tudorilicious.  Great details and such a nice restoration:

I continued on Chestnut to Gough to Francisco to Polk to North Point to Columbus into Montgomery to Clay to Sansome and into work.

  • Tuesday, May 27

I headed off after work Sutter to Fillmore to Clay to Locust to Washington to Arguello to Cabrillo to Funston and into the park at the Rose Garden.  There were many pretty things blooming there:

I followed the Great Highway to Golden Gate Park and then took MLK to Stow Lake where I stopped for some pics:

And me with the boat rental building behind me:

I then took JFK to the Panhandle and then Baker to Fulton.  I stopped at the top of Fulton to get a nice shot of the sun splashed Civic Center:

  • Sunday, May 25

Sunday was our last training ride.  We just went over to Tiburon for lunch at Guayma’s.  It was a short day and we all had lots of fun.  I took a bunch of pics before we left and demanded that everybody give me “flirty”:

Mr. Poe joined us for lunch!  He’s up for any activity that involves eating.  I think of all the pictures I’ve taken of him over the years, he’s always the happiest when he’s eating.   Case in point:

Mr. Poe and Annette look great in this pic but me, not so much.  Who didn’t warn me that my hair looked like that??

We headed back to San Francisco after lunch and then we went to REI to drop of two of my three bikes.  My road bike was just getting it’s new brakes but the Cannondale is going to need a new shifter which is a big ticket item luckily it was under warranty.  And one of the reasons I like REI is that they have all of my purchase history on their system so they’re taking care of all of it which is really great.  I’m getting the front wheel replaced while it’s in as well.  It should be done by the time the Lifecycle is over.  They got the brakes on my road bike done in just a couple of hours so I had that back right away so I’m not stuck on my wet weather commuter all week.  I’m pleased with that.

  • Saturday, May 24

I planned a big ride for Saturday as it was my last chance for a long training ride and I’d been itchin’ to ride my bike up to Sonoma for a long rime.  It was raining when I left the house, which is never a good sign, but Mr. Poe assured me that it was just gonna be like that in San Francisco and shooed me out the door.  I headed over to the Golden Gate Bridge where I saw something I’d never seen before.  I destroyer (I’m guessing on ship type) was coming into port and passing under the bridge:

And the whole crew was on deck.  Cool!

    The fog shrouded bridge:

I did indeed dry out a bit as I headed into Marin, but starting in Fairfax it started getting a little wetter the farther north I got.  I stopped at the cheese factory and then headed to Petaluma.  This house is on D street in Petaluma.  I think it’s interesting because, although it’s enormous, it uses a relatively small amount of ornamentation in contrast to homes from the same period in San Francisco.  Hard to tell if the builder was being thrifty or minimalist:

Here are some barges moored on the canal in Petaluma:

From there I took Lakeside Highway to Stage Gulch to Adobe into Sonoma.  Lakeside Highway has a bike lane and is a breeze to ride  on.  Stage Gulch and Adobe had

    1) Winding roads with no shoulder
    2) Fast moving traffic
    3) Rented SUV’s
    4) Wine Tasting

Eek.  Eek.  Eek.  Eek!  It’s supposed to be a bike route but It was pretty scary.  There was a big festival going on in Sonoma and maybe traffic isn’t always like that.  I’m going to call a bike shop there and see if there’s a better way because Sonoma is gorgeous.  There’s a huge plaza with a rose garden and a park.  I wish I had taken better pictures but it was pouring down rain and I was huddling under the portico at city hall eating my oreos and drinking a diet coke:

    .

The ride back to Petaluma was less scary.  Maybe I was getting used to it.  I saw this fabulous abandoned factory on the way back into town.  Countdown till it becomes lofts:

Back in Petaluma I saw the post office which I’d never noticed before.  I’m guessing it’s from the 20′s or the 30′s and it’s so cool looking:

This is the view looking at the golf course in San Geronimo Valley as I was coming back from Nicasio:

And me at the same vantage point:

I made it back into San Francisco and came out of the Presidio at the 15th Ave gate and then took Lake to 8th and into Golden Gate Park and then JFK to Stanyon to Page to Scott to Haight to Steiner.  This newish mural is on a building at Steiner at Haight.  I love it.  It’s so imaginative and manages to pull of surreal without being creepy like the murals on Turk at Market:

    How fabulous is this??

I made it home and Mr. Poe had dinner waiting and then I went to bed early.  Loong day.

    Bike Mileage:
    Today                                    127.2

  • Friday, May 23

I didn’t go riding in the morning.  I blame sweet little Ashley for this.  I got up early and had breakfast and then he was sleeping on the bed all cuddled up and looking so angelic and I couldn’t help myself from curling up next to him for an hour and half.  So I just came down Market and into work.  Ove lunch I went for a walk on Telegraph Hill which I don’t believe I’ve visited since Mr. Nick moved away.  Everything was in bloom and it looked beautiful.  Here are some pics of the Filbert Street steps.  A lot of the buildings look to me to be pre earthquake:

Adorable cat hanging out on doorstep:

The view up to Coit Tower from Montgomery and Filbert.  It’s supposed to look like a firehose nozzle:

Matisse-esque sculpture in a garden on Filbert.  Seems to me to be a little less “Matisse” and a little more “orgy”.  Zing!

The view of the Golden Gate Bridge from the base of Coit Tower:

    Me blocking view:

The view down Grant Street towards Nob Hill:

A gorgeous early 20th century building on Columbus at Broadway:

This is a shop in Chinatown.  I don’t get the name at all:

After work I had some mileage to make up so I headed off Columbus to North Point to Van Ness to Francisco to Gough to Chestnut to Lyon and into the Presidio.  I came around on Lincoln and then went over the Golden Gate Bridge, down into Sausalito and then along the bike path into Mill Valley.  I stopped at city hall to take a few pics.  It’s a fantastic building and so nicely detailed:

    Me in front to it:

I came back along the bike path and then through Sausalito and then back over the bridge.  I came out of the Presidio at 15th Ave and then took Lake to 23rd to Cabrillo to 30th and into Golden Gate Park.  I took JFK to Chain of Lakes to MLK to the Great Highway and then south.  I stopped for a few pics of the beautiful ocean in the setting sun:

    The view South:

I continued on the Great Highway to Taravel to Merced to Hernandez to Laguna Honda to Portola and Corbett and home.  Our friends Elaine and Megan came over for dinner and then I went to bed.
