I planned a big ride for Saturday as it was my last chance for a long training ride and I’d been itchin’ to ride my bike up to Sonoma for a long rime. It was raining when I left the house, which is never a good sign, but Mr. Poe assured me that it was just gonna be like that in San Francisco and shooed me out the door. I headed over to the Golden Gate Bridge where I saw something I’d never seen before. I destroyer (I’m guessing on ship type) was coming into port and passing under the bridge:

And the whole crew was on deck. Cool!

The fog shrouded bridge:

I did indeed dry out a bit as I headed into Marin, but starting in Fairfax it started getting a little wetter the farther north I got. I stopped at the cheese factory and then headed to Petaluma. This house is on D street in Petaluma. I think it’s interesting because, although it’s enormous, it uses a relatively small amount of ornamentation in contrast to homes from the same period in San Francisco. Hard to tell if the builder was being thrifty or minimalist:

Here are some barges moored on the canal in Petaluma:

From there I took Lakeside Highway to Stage Gulch to Adobe into Sonoma. Lakeside Highway has a bike lane and is a breeze to ride on. Stage Gulch and Adobe had
1) Winding roads with no shoulder
2) Fast moving traffic
3) Rented SUV’s
4) Wine Tasting
Eek. Eek. Eek. Eek! It’s supposed to be a bike route but It was pretty scary. There was a big festival going on in Sonoma and maybe traffic isn’t always like that. I’m going to call a bike shop there and see if there’s a better way because Sonoma is gorgeous. There’s a huge plaza with a rose garden and a park. I wish I had taken better pictures but it was pouring down rain and I was huddling under the portico at city hall eating my oreos and drinking a diet coke:

.
The ride back to Petaluma was less scary. Maybe I was getting used to it. I saw this fabulous abandoned factory on the way back into town. Countdown till it becomes lofts:

Back in Petaluma I saw the post office which I’d never noticed before. I’m guessing it’s from the 20′s or the 30′s and it’s so cool looking:

This is the view looking at the golf course in San Geronimo Valley as I was coming back from Nicasio:

And me at the same vantage point:

I made it back into San Francisco and came out of the Presidio at the 15th Ave gate and then took Lake to 8th and into Golden Gate Park and then JFK to Stanyon to Page to Scott to Haight to Steiner. This newish mural is on a building at Steiner at Haight. I love it. It’s so imaginative and manages to pull of surreal without being creepy like the murals on Turk at Market:

How fabulous is this??

I made it home and Mr. Poe had dinner waiting and then I went to bed early. Loong day.
