Month: April 2008

  • Thursday, April 17

I headed off after work Sutter to Fillmore to Sacramento.  I got a couple of shots of some of the beautiful Victorians on Sacramento:

This building is pretty as is, but it is likely missing a large conical roof on the bay called a "witches hat" roof:

    Check out the detail:

I continued on Sacramento to Arguello where I got a great view of the by Synagogue:

I took Arguello to Cabrillo to 12th to Fulton and into the Rose Rarden in Golden Gate Park which is starting to come into bloom!  Here's proof:

    And me in the garden:

I rode through the park and got a shot of some beautiful blooming trees by Spreckels Lake:

I took JFK to Bernice Rodgers to MLK to La Playa to the Great Highway to Noriega to 16th to Rivera to 15th to Santiago to 14th to Taravel to Merced to Hernandez to Laguna Honda.  There's a great view of Laguna Honda Hospital from Hernandez and Laguna Honda:

I continued on Laguna Honda to Portola to Corbett and then home.  Mr. Poe had to work late so I took Rufus to the park and then we all went home for dinner.

  • Thursday, April 17

I headed off Corbett to Portola to Fowler to Teresita to Isola to Rockdale to Omar to Sequoia to Bella Vista to Burlwood to Los Palmos to Hazelwood to Buena Vista to Brentwood Maywood to Buena Vista to Santa Clara into Vicente to 20th to Wawona and into Pine Lake Park.  A sign at 24th and Wawona said "dead end' but google maps seemed to think it went through.  THe sign was right, but I just had to around a couple of barriers to pick up Wawona again.  Here's the semi-creepy view from Pine Lake Park:

I continued on Wawona to 30th to Escolta to Vicente to and down to the coast.  It was incredibly foggy at the beach and visibility was really limited so I took Santiago to 36th to Lincoln to 35th to Irving.  I saw this building on 10th between Irving and Judah.  At first I thought it was a church but it isn't.  It must have once been a firehouse:

Me with a groovy garage door behind me:

I continued on Irving to 9th into Golden Gate Park to Middle to JFK and into the Panhandle to Baker to McAllister.  I love these three identical buildings. The one on the right has just been repainted and the scaffolding has come down in the last couple of days:

    Check out this detail:

I continued on McAllister to Larkin to Bush to Sansome and into work.

  • Wednesday, April 16

I headed off after work 2nd to Howard.  This is the view down Howard towards Saint Joseph's from 9th street.  Love the orange on the express building:

I continued on Howard to 11th to Harrison and into Precita Park.  It was very pretty at Precita Park and Bernal Hill is still green!

I took Precita to Mission to Richland to Leese to Agnon to Justin and into Saint Mary's Park. I took the footbridge over 280 and then took Trumball to Cambridge and into McLaren Park.  The view was spectacular from the park:

And one of me enjoying it:

I took Mansell into Persia to Ocean to Phelan to Judson to Gennessee to Flood to Foerster into Teresita to Portola to Corbett and home.

    Bike Mileage:
    Today                                    36.0
    Week to date                       118.6

  • Wednesday, April 16

It was really cold yet again this morning.  Where the heck is this global warming I keep hearing about??  I headed off Corbett to Portola to Woodside to Dewey to 16th to Vicente to 20th.  These pretty houses are on 20th.  I think...

I continued on 20th to Wawona to 24th to Vicente to 30th to Escolta where I saw this.  It's called the Pinehurst Lodge and it was originally built as an orphanage but is currently maintained by the Salvation Army.  It's a very interesting building:

I continued on Escolta to 33rd to Vicente down to the coast.  I came up the Great Highway and took it into Golden Gate Park and then took MLK to the Music Concourse where I stopped to take some pictures of the new California Academy of Sciences building:

    And me as well:

This is the de Young in the morning light. I love the twisting motion it conveys from this angle:

This is the new big yello thing in front of it.  I can't say that I love it like the new big yellow thing at the Palace of the Legion of Honor and I'm guessing that they're related since they're both big, new, and yellow and the museums are affiliated.  It just doesn't have the energy of the other piece.  It does kind of look like a big yellow penis but that's not enough to make me like it:

I hope it lights up.  Then I might like it a bit more.  But even then it's going to be a 'meh':

    3

I headed over to McLaren lodge and got a pic before I headed into the panhandle:

Then I took Baker to McAllister to Polk to Bush to Sansome and into work.

  • Tuesday, April 16

I headed off after work Columbus to North Point to Van Ness to Francisco to Gough to Chestnut to Lyon and into the Presidio.  Then I came around on Lincoln and went over the Golden Gate Bridge, down into Sausalito and along the bike path into Mill Valley.  I stopped by the pretty city hall to take a few pics:

Then I headed over to Mt Carmel to take a few shots of the pretty church

I was kind of surprised that there wasn't a better view from up there but this was the best I could do:

And here I am in front of the church:

I headed back to the bike path and back towards Sausality.  I stopped and took a a pic of Belvedere rising behind Richardson Bay Marina:

    And a close up:

    .

I continued into Sausalito and got another shot of Belvedere:

    And one of San Francisco

I stopped at the Northern pier on the Golden Gate Bridge for a few pics.  This is Point Bonita with the sun setting behind it:

And a ship heading somewhere with something:

    How arty!

And the moon riding behind some of the cables:

I headed back into the Presidio and came out at the 15th Ave gate by the spooky old hospital.  Then I took lake to 8th into Golden Gate Park and then JFK to the Pandhandle and then Stanyon to Page.  This pretty building is on Page at Divisadero.  The detail on is wonderful but I didn't think it would show up well in the fading light so you're going to have to wait for it.

I continued on Page to Scott to Duboce to Castro to 17th and then home.

I'm over 3,000 miles year to date today.  Hooray for me!

    Bike Mileage:
    Today                                    57.0
    Week to date                         82.6
    Month to date                      719.2
    Year to date                      3,030.6

  • Tuesday, April 15

It was very cold this morning as I headed off Corbett to Portola to Woodside to Dewey to Taravel and then down to the ocean.  I came up the Great Highway and  then got on Geary to 34th and then up to the Palace of the Legion of Honor. It looked really beautiful up there today:

    Me in front of it:

I came down El Camino Del Mar into Seacliff to Lake and got a shot of St. Ignatius over on Lone Mountain:

I continued on Lake to Arguello to Clay to Scott where I decided that the noise my rear brakes were making was likely metal grinding on metal so I took Scott to Waller to Steiner into Sanchez to Market to 17th home to get a different bike and then came down Market into work.

  • Monday, April 14

I slept in a little and didn't go for a longer ridie in the morning and just came down Market into work.

I headed off after work Columbus to North Point to Van Ness to Francisco to Laguna to Chestnut to Lyon and into the Presidio.  I came around on Lincoln and then into Seacliff on Camino Del Mar.  Then I got on 27th and got a good picture of one of the domes of the Holy Virgin Cathedral on Geary:

I turned onto Balboa and got some interesting shots of commercial buildings.  Balboa's not in the greatest shape, but there are some really nice buildings on it.  This is a pretty deco storefront:

The Balboa Theatre.  Looks like it's seen better days but it's pretty and in the Mission style I think:

This commercial building is kind of interesting because it looks to me like it was originally builit with a loggia which would make it really unusual in San Francisco:

I continued on Balboa down to the Great Highway where I got some shots of the beach:

And one of me as well:

This is the view north from Ocean Beach at around Fulton:

I turned onto JFK into Golden Gate Park and followed it all the way to the panhandle and then Stanyon to Page to Scott to Duboce to Castro to 17th and then home for dinner.

    Bike Mileage:
    Today                                    25.6
    Week to date                         25.6

  • Sunday, April 13

It was a beautiful warm morning and we headed off on our Lifecycle Training ride for the Cheese Factory.  I had my bike team fundraising party later that day so I couldn't do the whole ride.  I took a few pics when we stopped in Fairfax.  This is Peter with his new bike that he's very fond of:

And, of course, Miss Armstrong looking a little skeevy:

Monica (looking away), Regan and Courtney.  I HORRIFIED Regan soon after this pic was taken.  Courtney, not so much.

Kurt was eating an eclair.  Not good rest stop food.  But what can you do?  The kids today...

I headed home through Lucas Valley and then San Rafael and got home around 1.  I had lunch and got ready fro the party and then we headed over to Michael Schmucki's to help set up.  I got another shot of the Wisteria which looked and smelled even better today than yesterday:

The party was a resounding success.  We raised $8,700 which was terrific.  Beau Thompson was our speaker and he did a great job.  The party had a Mardi Gras theme.  We had King Cake shipped in from Haydel's in New Orleans and Mr. Poe made Jambalaya and Red Beans and Rice.  Donna Sachet even showed up which was lots of fun.  I saw an old friend from New Orleans that I hadn't seen in 15 years!  Mr. Poe disappeared during the presentation and it turned out later that he'd had the buffet room to himself and had been pigging out on shellfish.  Which is pretty much what I thought he'd been doing.  Here are a few of the pics I took:

Fun fact.  There were a couple of tries of a picture of Chris and I and this, by a wide margin, had me looking the least drunk.  Not good.

I headed home after the part and went to bed.  I was beat.

    Bike Mileage:
    Today                                    68.7

  • Saturday, April 12

Saturday was a tense day for us as sweet little Ashley had to get neutered.  We dropped him off and then went to the grocery store and then we headed down to Union Square because we were going to hang out with our friends Nathan and Daniel and then I had to get my hair done.  Here's Mr. Poe in front of his prize winnin' wisteria.  Well he should get a prize for them. They look and smell wonderful:

We headed down to Union Square and headed over to Nathan's on Mason Street.  I saw this cool doorway on Mason with an unusual copper color:

A little further up this hill I saw this awesome gothic revival apartment building.  Not in the greatest shape but the detail is wonderful:

We hung out with Nathan and Daniel for a while and then I went off to get my hair done and then we went and picked up Ashley who was a little groggy and testicle free but otherwise fine.

  • Friday, April 11

The day heated up to the warmest we'd had all year!  I headed off after work Sansome to Jackson to Front to Broadway where I got a great shot of the Transamerica Pyramid against the blue, blue sky:

I continued on Broadway to Columbus to North Point to Van Ness to Francisco to Laguna to Chestnut to Lyon and into the Presidio.  I don't know what these flowers are called but I found them in the Presidio and I love them:

I continued onto Lincoln in the Presidio and headed towards Seacliff.  I stopped at the top of the cliff to get some shots of the beautiful view:

This reminds me of Ashley chasing after Rufus:

This is the view down the cliff:

I continued on Lincoln to Camino Del Mar to 25th to California to 32nd where I got a few shots of mid century perfection on Marvel Street:

I continued on 32nd to Anza to 48th where I got a few pics of Ocean Beach from Sutro Heights.  It was warm and sunny and the beach was crowded.  In April!  Fancy that:

    .

This is me with Sutro Heights street int he background:

I took Sutro Heights to 47th to Balboa to the Great Highway to JFK in Golden Gate Park to MLK to the Music Concourse to JFK to the panhandle and then Stanyon to Page to Scott to Duboce to Castro to 17th and home.
