Month: March 2008

  • Wednesday, March 26

I headed off Corbett to Portola to Fowler to Teresita to Gaviota to Bella Vista to Burlwood to Los Palmos to Hazelwood to Yerba Buena where I saw this beautiful flowering tree in front of a pretty home:

I continued on Yerba Buena.  This house is at Yerba Buena and Santa Monica:

I crossed Portola onto Vicente and headed west.  Saint Cecilia's looked so pretty in the morning light:

I continued on San Vicente to the ocean and came up the Great Highway and went into Golden Gate Park at MLK.  I took it to the Music Concourse and then JFK to the Panhandle and then Stanyon to Page because I didn't get enough of all the beautiful homes on Page Street last night:

I took a bunch of shots of this house last night.  It was equally gorgeous this morning:

Check out the detail on this place:

These are a bunch of Victorians on Page between Pierce and Steiner (I think).  Some of them are in so-so condition but they're all so pretty.  I hope some day someone will give them the lovin' they deserve:

I continued on Page to Market to Sansome and into work.

  • Tuesday, March 25

I headed off after work Columbus to North Point to Van Ness to Francisco to Octavia to Chestnut to Lyon and into the Presidio.  The Presidio is a beautiful place and I got a couple of shots of it's charmingly repetitive construction:

I came around on Lincoln and got a few pics of the beautiful World War II memorial.  The glamorous lawn all around it must be a pain to maintain but it's worth it because it looks lo beautiful and velvety against the cool marble and the trees:

Me--  more shiny than velvety.  Note to self:  mattify:

Lincoln spits you out on Camino Del Mar in Seacliff.  Which is such a glorious part of the city to be in when the sun is shining.  It's chock full of fabulous homes:

I took Camino Del Mar to 28th to McLaren.  This is the view back down at Camino Del Mar from McLaren:

Thn I took 29th to Clement to 34th to Balboa to the Great Highway and then I went into Golden Gate Park at JFK and took it all the way to the Panhandle and then took Stanyon to Page where I enjoyed myself ogling the beautiful Victorians on Page Steet.  This one is so spectacular and so well kept up.  I like:

I continued on Page to Scott to Duboce to Castro to 17th and then home.  We went to the dog park and then Mr. Poe made me a salad which walnuts that he toasted himself.  I wish he was on spring break all the time.

  • Tuesday, March 25

It was foggy and damp this morning but not so cold.  I headed off Corbett to Portola to Woodside to Dewey to Taravel and down to the Ocean.  I came up the Great Highway and took Geary to 34th up to the Palace of the Legion of Honor which looked beautiful and a little mysterious in the foggy morning light.

    Me??  Not so much:

I came down Camino Del Mar to Lake to Arguello to Clay to Fillmore to Pacific to Mason where I got a couple of shots of the Spanish church Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe on Broadway between Mason and Taylor.  This church was built in 1912 and is likely the first San Francisco church built of reinforced concrete.  It replaced an earlier church at the same site than was both completed and destroyed in 1906

I would expect the circulat element to be a window but it's a mosaic and it's in kind of in poor repair.  It lacks the elegance of the rest of the structure and I wonder if it's original:

I continued on Broadway to Montgomery to Clay to Sansome and into work.

  • Monday, March 24

Mr. Poe took a picture of me holding sweet little Ashley in my kitchen while I was home for lunch yesterday.  He's so tiny and so precious. And so much like Ashley Senior.

After work I headed off Sutter to Fillmore to Clay to Spruce to Washington to Arguello to Lake to 23rd to Balboa.  I took another pic of pretty St. Thomas the Apostle on Balboa at 40th.  I think it looks even better in the afternoon light:

I took 40th to Anza to 48th to Sutro Heights where I stopped and took some pictures of the coast looking south:

The North Windmill I love so much.  I can't wait until the South Windmill is reinstalled:

I took Sutro Heights to 47th to Balboa.  This is Sutro Height Park from Balboa and the Great Highway:

And me in front of it:

I took the Great Highway to Moraga and headed East.  This would have been a great shot of a beautiful church on Lawton except for all the wires that obstruct the view.  Wires are slowly going underground but it won't be finished in my lifetime.  The city will be much improved without them:

I continued on Moraga where I got a great view of the Golden Gate Bridge in the 30's.  Except, of course, for all these crappy wires:

I continued on Moraga to 20th to Ortega to 18th to Rivera to Cecilia to Santiago to 14th to Taravel to Kensington to Vasquez to Garcia to Idora to Laguna Honda to Portola to Corbett and then home to take the dogs to the park.  Mr. Poe had made yet another delicious dinner and then I did a little work while he watched his crappy TV programs.

  • Monday, March 24

It was clear over my house when I walked Rufus this morning, but I could see the fog hanging to the hills and hear foghorns so I knew that wasn't going to be the case for my ride.  And I was right.  I headed off Corbett to Portola to Woodside to Dewey to Taravel and down to the coast and it was super foggy.  I came up the Great Highway and went into Golden Gate Park at MLK and went up to Stow Lake where it looked like a set for a horror movie.  Where are the zombies??

    Brains.... brains... brains....

I came out of the park at 8th Avenue and then took Lake to Arguello to Clay.  It was sunny by the time I hit Presidio. I continued on Clay to Fillmore to Pacific.  This is the view from Russian Hill looking north on Pacific:

I continued on Pacific to Powell to Jackson.  This is the view from Jackson looking North over Chinatown:

I continued on Jackson to Davis and picked up my dry cleaning and then Broadway to the Embarcadero to Washington to Battery to Sacramento to Sansome and into work.

  • Sunday, March 23

We had a great Lifecycle training ride out to Lucas Valley through glorious China Camp.  It's pretty much my favorite of the series.  I spent the first part of the ride racing with this super cute rider named Mike.  He's from Oklahoma, where I'm guessing he's described as "A little slice of heaven right here on Earth.":

I had to point at a turn for a while and then the sweeps came through and we headed to lunch.  Lunch is at this little deli on Lucas Valley Road where they're really nice and it's a really fun place to stop.  Just look how delighted Sandra looks:

As do the rest of the riders:

Kurt learned his posing skills from Miss Jay.  Sandra realized she had a flat just as we were getting ready to leave.  I found the piece offending of glass.  Yes me.  And you thought all I was good for was looking pretty.

This is the view from the parking lot of the deli.  Spectactular:

We headed up to the top of Lucas Valley.  I think it's called Big Rock Hill because of the big rocks at the top of it.  I headed up first so I could get a few shots of the rest of the riders as they came up.  This is Andrew.  This is his first ride with us and he had a lot of fun:

Here he is with me and I'm totally rocking the he-cleavage:

This is the view from the top of Lucas Valley back down towards San Rafael:

    Next came Sandra and Kurt:

Ben in his signature (read ONLY) outfit:

And finally Kelly and Marvin.  Good job guys!

We headed back into San Francisco.  I kind of got in trouble in Fairfax for feeding scones to a dog who, evidently,l was "too fat already" but in my defense he was begging really hard and I'm only human.  I got home about 5:30 and Mr. Poe had dinner ready for me (huzzah!) and we took the dogs to the park and I went to bed.

  • Saturday, March 22

I got up early and watched cartoons and cleaned up my office and the closet in the bedroom.  Then Mr. Poe and I headed off to go see the Annie Leibovitz exhibit at the Palace of the Legion of Honor.  Here, they seem to be filming a scene from the movie "I married a porn star":

I tend to like the Palace of the Legion of Honor a bit more than anything that they exhibit in it.  Their shows are a little hit of miss and the organization can be a little problematic with stuff strewn all over the exhibit hall with no real cohesion of progression.  The Leibovitz exhibit was pretty much like that.  There were three groups of photographs that shown:

    1) formal photo's of famous people that seemed forced, staged and completely uninsightful.  They looked very commercial.  They could have all been ads for stuff.
    2) large scale landscapes that were interesting from a technical as well as geological standpoint.
    3) Very small (I want to say 4X6) photographs with extremely intimate details from her family life.  I kind of had to strain to look at them because of their size but when I did I felt like I was intruding on her life because the stuff she was documenting was subjects like the long decline and death of her partner to cancer and the death of her father.  It made me kind of uncomfortable which really was pretty neat and I'm guessing the point of all of it.  This was my favorite part of the exhibit.

Afterwards we walked around the permanent collection which is always nice because the building is so pretty:

    Hello gorgeous!

I think I've taken pics of this beautiful Della Robbia terra cotta before:

This is a late Renaissance Spanish Ceiling that would look great at my house. You know, my birthday is coming up:

    The courtyard of the museum:

From the front steps with the Marin Headlands in the background:

After we left we headed down to the museum to check out the progress on the tulips.  Still all yellow.  But it was beautiful there and I got a couple of pics:

We went home and had lunch and then I headed off on my bike 18th to Valencia to Mission to Richland to Leese to Crescent to Agnon to Justin and into Saint Mary's Park.  I came over the footbridge and then took Trumbull to Cambridge to Bacon to San Bruno into Bayshore to Guadalupe Canyon into East Market to San Pedro to Washington to 87th to South Park Plaza to Park Plaza to Joh Daly to Lake Perced to Skyline to the Great Highway where I stopped at Sloat for a few pics:

I continued on the Great Highway and went into Golden Gate Park at MLK I took that to the Music Concourse and then JFK to the Panhandle where I got a flat (!@#%$##) and then Baker to Page to Scott to Waller to Fillmore to Duboce to Market to 17th and then home.  I got cleaned up and then we took the Ashley and Rufus to the park and then checked out the construction on a house on Douglass Street.  They've removed all the crappy siding and then excavated for a garage.  I think they're going to put in a garage, move the historic house forward to sit on top of it, and then build a new house that fronts on Ord Street behind it.  Stay tuned!

  • Friday, March 21

I met Mr. Poe over lunch in the Castro where we got Easter Pedicures.  I got a lovely orange color called "Melon of Troy".  I've had that before.  before heading back to work I managed to snag 10(!!) comic books at the comic book store in the castro.  That's a lot, but Spider man comes out three times a month these days and it's hard to keep up.

I headed off after work Howard to 11th to Harrison to Precita Park and then took Precita to Mission to Richland to Crescent to Agnon to Justin and in to Saint Mary's Park.  I took the footbridge over 280 and then took Trumball to Cambridge to University to Bacon to Hamilton to Woolsey where I got a few more pics of the beautifully decayed Woolsey Street Greenhouses:

I continued on Woolsey to San Bruno into Bayshore to Guadalupe Canyon Parkway.  I headed up the hill and got a nice shot of Brisbane from about halfway up:

It spits you out in Daly City on E Market and I took that to San Pedro to Washington where I got a nice shot of the late afternoon in Daly City:

And one of me as well:

I took Washington to 87th to Southgate to Westridge to Skyline.  The sun was setting as I came back into the city.  This is the headlands from Skyline just south of Lake Merced:

And this is the coast from a little further north:

    The sun's last rays:

I continued on Skyline to lake Merced to Middlefield to Eucalyptus into Ocean to San Leandro to Darien to San Aleso to Monterey to El Verano to Maywood to Miraloma to Portola to Corbett and home.  Great ride.

  • Friday, March 21

I headed off Corbett to Portola to Woodside to Dewey to Taravel and down to the coast.  I came up the Great Highway where I got a great shot of the early morning at the beach:

I came up the Great Highway and then turned on Balboa.  I stopped to take pictures of pretty St. Thomas the Apostle's.  It's kind of a difficult building to photograph because it's beauty lies in it's handsome geometry and simplicity rather than fine detail.  So detail shots are kind of blah but, in person, it's one of the nicest churches in town.

I continued on Balboa to 33rd to Clement to 32nd.  These pretty homes have some nice stonework on them., althouhg the one on the right suffers from an awkward garage:

I continued on 32nd to Camino Del Mar into Lincoln and through the Presidio.  The Marin Headlands looked glorious in the early morning light:

A money shot of the Golden Gate Bridge:

    And my smilin' face:

I continued on Lincoln to and then went down to Crissy Field and then took Marina Blvd to Fort Mason and then through Fisherman's Wharf and then Beach to Columbus to North Point to the Embarcadero to Market to California to Sansome and into work.

  • Thursday, March 20

I headed off after work Sutter to Fillmore to Clay to Spruce to Washington.  This is the view down Spruce (I think it's Spruce) from Washington:

Close up with Fort Mason on the left and Tiburon on the right:

And me with it all behind me:

I continued on Washington to Arguello to Lake to 8th and into Golden Gate Park.  My beloved Rose Garden isn't yet in bloom but it's growing so it won't be long:

I took JFK through the park to Berenice Rodgers to MLK and then took the Great Highway to Noriega and came up on that.  This house is on Noriega and 18th.  It's interesting because it seems to be quite a bit older than any of the homes around it and I think that it was either moved to this location or it was the first house built here and was originally on a bit more land:

This house is on 18th a few blocks down.  It's Tudorlicious!  You can see how windy it is up there by the bend on the trees in front of it:

I continued on 18th to Rivera to 15th to Santiago to 14th to Taravel to Dewey to Merced to Hernandez to Laguna Honda to Portola to Corbett and home.
