Month: December 2007

I went shopping with Mr. Chris over lunch down in Union Square.  On the way there I noted that they were FINALLY found a retailer for the huge space at Grant and Post that had been vacant since I moved here.  It's going to be an ENORMOUS Prada store.  They've put up an illustration of what the store will look like on the construction barricades they've erected.  How clever!  I'll return to find out if they edit the little price tags on the garments painted on the mural to account for the falling dollar.

It's interesting that Prada chose the site they chose because they were originally supposed to go in across the street in this building that is getting a glorious renovation that will soon house the DeBeers store I believe.

This is the pretty Christmas Tree on Union Square:

This is the pretty dome from Westfield Center:

On my way back to the office from lunch I noted that some buildings in the Financial District are more decorated than others:

After work I headed off Sutter to Fillmore to Sacramento to 23rd to Cabrillo and down the the ocean and then down the Great Highway to Vicente to Santa Clara to Monterey to Diamond to Chenery to 30th to San Jose to 29th to Tiffany to Valencia into Market and then Hayes to Scott to Duboce to Castro to 17th and then home.

  • It was cold this morning!!  It was in the thirties when I headed out.  I went Corbett to Portola to Woodside to Dewey to Taravel and then down to the ocean.  I came up the Great Highway and went into the park.  It was very frosty in the park!  I came up JFK and took some pics:

And one of me looking very, very awake with my groovy golden lenses:

I headed up JFK.  I saw some cool fog at the road that goes to Stow Lake.  It was only a couple of feet off the ground and very dense:

I had to bicycle through it and it was pretty cold.  I came out of the park at the panhandle and rode through it to Baker to McAllister to Webster to Post to Van Ness to Clay to Polk where I stopped by Bob's Donuts.  Bob's has the best donuts I've ever had.  Poor vegan me doesn't get to eat food like that anymore but my coworkers liked them.  I continued on Polk to Bush to Sansome and into work.

  • Thursday, December 13

I got another late start and so I just rode down Market into work.  After work, I headed out Howard to 11th to Harrison to 25th to Valencia to Tiffany to 29th to San Jose to Wilder to Diamond to Monterey to Santa Clara to Vicente and then down to the ocean.  I came up the Great Highway to Cabrillo to Arguello to Euclid to Presidio to Port to Scott to Duboce to Divisadero to 17th Street and then home. Mr. Poe was supposed to be at class but he'd gotten out of work very late so he was home which was a treat.  We had dinner and I walked the dogs and went to bed early.

I got a very late start so I just rode down Market into work.  Over lunch, I headed home and got some pics of the renovation that continues down the street:

This is Castro Street  viewed from Castro and Market:

    And the Castro theater:

I headed back to work and Mr. Chris came and visited me at work with Sofi, the world's sweetest dog.  She's staying with us at Christmas and I'm really looking forward to it.  She's very, very gentle with the puppy.

These are details from the Shell building  It' hard to get a good vantage point to photgraph.  It's very detailed:

Christmas decorations across the street from the Shell building:

This tiny little building is on Bush between Sansome And Battery.  Very beautiful but very narrow:

I got out of work kind of late and headed home up Market.

I walked around the financial district around lunchtime and took a few pics.  This cool sign for the zoo encorporates the entire post as the giraffe's neck:

This is the beautiful customs house on Battery Street:

This is the fountain of the lobby of the building I work in:

  • Tuesday, December 11

I was pretty beat when I got up this morning but I managed to drag myself out of bed and take Rufus out for a walk.  Note to the cute twenty something Asian guy that was inexplicably standing on the sidewalk on 17th street between Castro and Hartford in the freezing cold with his pants around his ankles masturbating:  drugs are bad.  Note to self:  bring camera on morning dog walks.

I got ready and headed out on my bike Corbet to Portola to Woodside to Dewey to Taravel and then down to the coast.  It was really cold, but it was a gorgeous morning.  I took a few pics on the bike path north towards Marin Headlands:

    And also one of me:

I continued up the Great Highway to Geary than up to the Palace of the Legion of Honor then down to Lake to Arguello to Clay to Steiner to Post to Kearny to Bush to Sansome and into work.

  • Monday, December 10

I headed off after work Sutter to Presidio to Euclid to Arguello to Cabrillo down to the ocean and then down the Great Highway to Cutler to 47th to Vicente to 14th to Santa Ana to Monterey to Genessee and into class.  My quiz was not quite as hard as I was afraid it was going to be.  Puppies at my house have drastically reduced the time I've been spending in class.  After I headed up Foerster to Teresita to Fowler to Portola to Corbett and then home.

    Bike Mileage:
    Today                              38.5
    Week to date                   38.5

  • Monday, December 10

The baby only got me up once last night.  Huzzah!  I got up on time and walked Rufus and then headed out Corbett to Portola to Woodside to Dewey to Taravel and down to the coast.  I realized I'd forgotten my wallet (d'oh) so I headed up the Great Highway to Judah and then rode home Judah into Parnassus to Clayton to 17th and home.  Mr. Poe was still home!  Here he is holding the baby:

And here I am with all of them:

Ashley declared war first on the snowman on the tree skirt:

    And then on Rufus:

I came down Market into work.  This building is at 7th and Market:

And the beautiful Golden Gate theatre which hopefully someone will restore before it falls over:

Do you remember Red Gorilla??  To me they epitomized the excesses of the dot com era because they went bankrupt before they could occupy the incredibly expensive offices that they had taken in prime retail space on Market St. The building, which had been vacant since they went bankrupt in 2000 has been town down and something new is going in.  I don't know if it's a new building or an extension of the beautiful building next to it:

And then I continued on Market to Sansome and into work.

  • Sunday, December 9

I almost didn't go biking because my boys looked so adorable:

But it was a pretty morning so off I went.  I headed up Corbett to Clayton.  This building is at 17th and Clayton.  It's so fabulous.  It just looks incredible:

I continued on Clayton to Parnassus to Cole to Beulah to Stanyon and into Golden Gate Park.  I rode throught the park on JFK down to the ocean and then took the Great Highway down to Sloat where I stopped to ogle the surfers.

This guy was hosing his junk out for an astonishingly long time.  Call me a chester, but if you're going hose out your business in public I'm going to take pictures and put them on my blog:

I continued down the Great Highway and then got on Skyline and then took the 1 down into Pacifica.  This is Rockaway beach:

I headed up towards Devil's Slide.  This is the new tunnel they're building to bypass the area prone to slides.  It's cool to watch it going in:

This is the view North towards the Marin Headlands from Devil's Slide:

And the view down.  Watch that last step!

And one of me with the ocean behind me:

This is the other side of that tunnel.

I continued down the 1 towards Half  Moon Bay.  These are some surfers heading out at Montara State Beach:

This is the view of the bay:

I went into Half Moon Bay and then continued south to Tunitas Creek Road.  There are pretty farms on the lower part of it.

I then climbed all the way up to Skyline and then down King's Mountain into Woodside.  This is the view about halfway down King's Mountain:

I rode through Woodside.  This pretty church is on Woodside Road:

I continued on Woodside to Canada into Skyline to Sloat to Portola to Corbett and back home.  It was a beautiful day.

    Bike Mileage:
    Today                               85.7
    Week to date                  213.7
    Month to date                 336.1

  • Saturday, December 8

We took little Ashley down to the Union Square so Mr. Poe could do some shopping.  Ashley was very popular in the mall.  Here we are outside the book store.  You can hardly notice by my delighted expression that he'd just peed in my lap.  It was just a little.

This is the dome of the Westfield Center.  Beside the facade, this is pretty much all that remains of the old Emporium store that was once on this site:

I can also unfortunately report that the super cute guy at the Yves Saint Laurent counter isn't looking super cute these days but instead like he's been up drinking for three days.  He looked a little tired, a little puffy, and a little old.  Quelle Horreur!  He needs to lay off the sauce and get his ass into the gym.  Because there are things that Touche Eclat cannot fix.

After we got back I had a little lunch and took Rufus for a long walk. He's been feeling a little left out since we've gotten the baby because it's thrown everybody's schedule out of whack.  So we took a long, rambling walk through the Castro, over to Alamo Square, out to Pacific Heights, over to Japantown and then home through Hayes Valley.  It was a beautiful day!

This house at Page and Steiner was converted into apartments and the entrance moved to the basement. They put a really ugly window where the front door used to be and it's kind a shame because it's a really beautiful house:

This mansion is at Fell and Steiner.  Also converted into apartments, I think, which explains the facade ruining fire escapes all over the building:

This house is at Steiner and Hayes.  You wouldn't really notice it very much, but it has the most gorgeously restrained entrance that's so beautifully executed:

This is the shot of Steiner between Hayes and Grove that's in all the books.  It Victorianilicious:

This pretty building at Grove and Steiner is the victim of a bad attic extension.  I think it's a school now.  It's was once a pretty building but now, not so much.  Kind of like Priscilla Presley:

This is the view up Fulton from Alamo Square at Pierce:

And the view down Pierce from the same vantage point.  That's Alta Plaza opposite:

This pretty house is on Pierce:

    As is this fabulous mural:

This is the view down Geary from the footbridge at Steiner:

    St Dominic's:

This is the view from Alta Plaza looking towards Japantown:

This is the big fabulous apartment building at Jackson and Steiner:

Pretty holiday display in the Shu Uemura window on Fillmore Street:

I think I finally found a good vantage point to photograph this building in Japantown at Webster and Post:

    The bridge over Webster:

This is the bridge over Geary at Webster:

I saw a couple Fedex MD11's taking off for Asia from Oakland.  I love MD11's.  So pretty:

Japantown from the footbridge at Webster:

    The Cathedral:

This is the view down Turk Street.  You can see that huge apartment building at One Rincon Hill:

The view down Fulton to City Hall:

This pretty mural is on a parking garage.  It's by Josef Norris and you can visit his website here:

This fabulous building is on Gough at Hayes:

This is the playgroung on Octavia from Fell.  It's hard to believe that just a few short years ago there was a freeway exit here and the only visitors were crackheads.  This neighborhood has blossomed since:

This apartment building has just been repainted.  It was on Skid Row five years ago but today is a nice place to live:

This big building used to be a hotel and is now apartment.  It has a fabulous bar on the first floor:

Rufus was pretty beat by the time we got home and he tried to nap but the baby wasn't going to let him:

Nathan came over to help decorate for Christmas that night.  My Santa hat finally came out of storage. Christmas has arrived!  Rufus was not crazy about the Reindeer horns:

Mimi didn't mid them.  I think she thought they were slimming:

Ashley had completely conked out by 8PM or so:

But Mr. Poe was still cleaning:

He was still cleaning when I went to bed.  It was an exhausting day.
