Thursday I came down Market and went to the gym before work.  It was sunny in the Financial District but there was really thick fog by the Embarcadero.  Crazy:

I went and met my friend Quela who’s in town for a conference mid day and we got to hang out for a while.  I haven’t seen her in forever and it was such a treat. After work I headed out Sansome to Pacific.  These gorgeous homes are on Pacific at Webster:

I continued on Pacific to Clay to Spruce to Washington where I stopped for a pic of my favorite view of the North Bay:

I took Washington to Arguello to Lake to 28th.  These fabulous homes are on McLaren at 28th:

This is the view down 28th from McLaren:

I continued on 28th to El Camino Del Mar and up to the Palace of the Legion of Honor:

I headed down to 34th to Balboa and down to the coast.  Ocean Beach was warm, gorgeous, and popular:

I headed down to Great Highway to Taravel to Merced to Hernandez to Laguna Honda to Portola to Corbett to Ord and home for dinner.  I tried to go to bed early but it’s warmer than I like and that didn’t happen.

We had some very good news on Wednesday with the Supreme Court rulings on prop 8 and DOMA.  The Prop 8 ruling doesn’t affect us directly because Mr. Poe and I got hitched during the period in 2008 between the court ruling that allowed same sex marriages in California and prop 8′s passage.  But the ruling on DOMA is very significant for us as it will greatly streamline our taxes and estate planning and, as Mr. Poe’s Italian, he’s very excited that I can no longer be compelled to testify against him in court.  I’m disappointed that SCOTUS went the easy way out on Prop 8 and ruled on the standing issue rather than doing the right thing and giving everybody the rights they deserve.  But I’m confident that one day everybody will have the right to marry.

I managed to get up early and head out on my bike.  I rode 18th to Valencia to Tiffany to 29th to San Jose to Wilder to Monterey to Ridgewood to Flood to Hazelwood to Greenwood to Plymouth to Wildwood to Faxon to De Montefort to Ashton to Head to Holloway to Font to Lake Merced to Middlefield to Eucalyptus to Clearfield into 34th to Yorba to 35th to Vicente and down to the coast.  I came up the Great Highway and went into Golden Gate Park at JFK and stopped at the North Windmill for pics.  It was incredibly wet and foggy at the beach:

I don’t know how I’d failed to notice this incredibly comprehensive “DON’T” sign before:

I continued on JFK and stopped for a pic of the fog burning off at the De Young:

I continued on JFK into the Panhandle to Baker to McAllister to Polk where I stopped for a pic of City Hall that was jam packed with media:

I took Polk to O’Farrell to Grant to Post to Kearny to Clay to Sansome and into work.  I headed home for lunch and Mr. Poe got a pic of me holding sweet little Ashley Jr.:

    Mr. Poe and Mimi:

After work I headed off 2nd to Howard to 11th into Bryant to Precita.  This pretty Victorian is on Precita at Florida:

I continued on Precita to Mission to Richland where I stopped for a pic looking south:

I continued on Richland to Arlington where I saw these pretty homes:

I continued on Arlington to Wilder to Diamond to Monterey.  This is the view looking up San Felipe from Monterey:

I continued on Monterey into Santa Clara.  These gorgeous homes are on Santa Clara at Yerba Buena:

I continued on Santa Clara to Portola to Claremont to Dewey to Laguna Honda into 7th to Judah to 9th and into Golden Gate Park.  I headed over to the Music Concourse and stopped for a pic of the de Young:

I came out of the park at 8th and took Cabrillo to Arguello to Balboa.  This is the view looking west from halfway up the hill.  You can see a wall of fog at the coast:

I continued on Balboa to Baker to Golden Gate to Broderick where I saw this glorious Victorian:

I continued on Broderick to Hayes to Scott to Duboce to Castro.  The Castro was packed with people celebrating the verdicts:

I continued on Castro to 17th to Ord and home for dinner.  After, I got cleaned up and went to bed.  It had been a very long day.

Tuesday morning I came into work on Muni.  We’ve had a very unusual storm in the bay area and it was raining.  In June!  Unbelievable.  I headed off on foot over lunch over to Civic Center because I wanted to have a look at the massive amount of construction on Market between 5th and 7th.  It’s pretty remarkable–  it seems that more buildings are under construction than not.  Will this revitalization finally improve conditions on 6th St and the Tenderloin?  I ain’t waitin’ up nights because it seems like every San Francisco mayor in the last hundred years has tried and failed to clean up the Tenderloin.  Developing.

Here are some pics from the construction site for the unimaginatively titled ‘Market Street Place’.  This is a link to their site.  There was a bit of back and forth about demolishing the 1910 St Francis Theater but in the end development won out and it was demolished.  I have mixed feelings about that.  On one hand, it was a handsome building when constructed and it’s a shame to see it go, but on the other hand it was a pretty much unusable structure in terrible condition in a neighborhood that needs foot traffic more than monuments.

I love the remnants of the long forgotten billboards:

A little farther down Market I noted that Market Street Cinema has closed.  A search on the internets seemed to indicate that it isn’t being remodeled and is just closed.  I don’t know that it’s slated for the wrecking ball because it’s in a protected building but I think there are a limited number of uses for it.  Maybe they’ll turn it into a gym.  PS if you ever went there and actually touched the magic, you might need to go to your doctor to get a topical cream.

Renovations continue on the Oddfellows building and the sign says we’re gonna get another CVS.  How many drug stores does San Francisco need?

Then I headed over to the 2007 Federal Building designed by Thom Mayne to check out the skygarden on 11-13.  The interior of the building has a lot of interesting volumes and angles but I don’t know that I’d describe it as ‘super fantastic’:

The skygarden was a bit of a letdown.  It looks like it’s gonna be bigger from the ground but it’s pretty small although the views are nice:

This is the David Hewes Building.  It’s pretty much a disgrace.  I wasn’t able to find any before pictures of it, but it seems to me to be an early 20th century office building with a 1963 renovation that’s falling off in pieces.  I hope that the building gets redone like the Hearst Building down the street.  I think it would be great as condos but finding people willing to live at the corner of crack and whore might be a bit of a tough sell.  A lot of the tenants are nonprofits which makes sense because the rents have to be pretty low on such a shabby building.  Please help:

Some recent decay has revealed part of the classic 50′s Shasta ad that’s painted on the side of the building:

I headed back towards the office and stopped in Westfield Center for lunch.  I headed up in search of the public roof deck there.  You can’t get to it from the mall but you can get under the beautiful dome:

You have to take an elevator from the office entrance at 835 Market.  Whatever you do, don’t try to take the fire stairs because all the doors to the upper floors are locked and there are no signs to tell you this and you have to go all the way down to the first floor and get yelled at by a security guard and then take the elevator from there.  The deck isn’t really very nice and wasn’t worth all the effort in getting up there:

I headed back to the office.  After work, instead of going to the gym like I should have, I met up with Mr. Chris and we went to meet David in Union Square.  I noted the hot pride display at the Neiman Marcus:

Chris and David had dinner reservations so I went and hung out with Miss Smith.  It got a little boozy and I didn’t stumble home until almost 10(!).  I had some food and went to bed.

Monday was ‘Walk to Work’ Monday.  I headed out with Mr. Poe and then dropped him off at Muni and headed off for Duboce Park.  It was a wet morning and there weren’t a lot of people about:

Then I headed over to pretty Koshland Park which has a lovely view of Civic Center from between the trees:

Then I headed over to Patricia’s Green which is what they’ve named the greenspace on Octavia between Fell and Hayes.  It looks better every time I go.  Fabulous:

I love the Raudenbush’s 2010 Burning Man piece called ‘Future’s Past’:

Hayes Valley is also getting some pretty fantastic murals:

You can see 100 Van Ness in the background.  It’s being repurposed into an updated structure that’s gonna look FABULOUS:

This is Keith Sklar’s 1989 ‘Learning Wall’ at Franklin and Hayes.  Faded or fabulous?  You be the judge:

I walked around Civic Center and got a bunch of pics of the beautiful buildings.  San Francisco just gets better and better:

I headed over to Mission Street which is pretty gritty in the morning.  Luckily, I walk fast.  This recent mural is on Mission between 8th and 7th and I’m almost positive it’s on the site of a building that burned down a couple of years ago.  They had a lot of trouble putting the fire out and their was foam all over Mission Street:

    The fantastic federal building:

This recent mural is on Natoma at 6th:

I headed over to the Whole Foods on 4th and Harrison and got some donuts and greedily devoured them as I walked through Yerba Buena.  This is the view up Yerba Buena Lane from Mission:

I headed over to Grant and got a pic of the Chinatown gate:

I headed into the office.  I went home for lunch and didn’t notice that I’d left my house keys at work until I was already on Douglass.  Fuck!  I headed back and got them and went home to let the dogs out.  I don’t know what was up with me in the afternoon because I cleaned out my desk for change and ate junk food all afternoon.  After work I went to my spin class which was awesome and then I went home for dinner.  After, I got cleaned up and went to bed.

Sunday I led a Different Spokes ride up to Alpine Dam and Mount Tam.  My friend Karen missed this route on the ALC series and she asked that I lead it again and so I did.  The weather looked a little iffy when we left and it got a lot worse.  We only had sprinkles until Alpine Dam but when we got to the top of Mount Tam it was incredibly foggy and very wet and we had a wet, scary drop down into Mill Valley.  My hand we completely numb by the time we got down the mountain and it was pretty miserable but that didn’t last forever so I think we had a good day.

    Ray on the bike path:

I got home and got cleaned up for dinner.  I didn’t stay up late.  The cold and wet really takes it out of ya and I went to bed very early.

Saturday I got up early and walked the dogs.  We headed off for grocery shopping and then after lunch we drove out to Sloat Garden center and Mr. Poe went shopping while I walked home with Rufus.  I hadn’t taken him in a very long walk for some time and he’s pretty out of shape.  But that didn’t stop us.  First we headed over to Pine Lake which I hadn’t been to in years.  Pretty:

Then we walked around Stern Grove which seems so in the middle of nowhere for a place you can take a Muni train to:

Rufus was already looking a little worn out:

These are some of the pretty homes on Sloat and Portal:

This fabulous bank on Portal has wonderful art incorporated into it:

I headed up Ulloa and got a nice pic of Sutro tower rising behind St. Brendan’s:

Then we headed over Panoramic to Mountain Spring.  I love the west side of Twin Peaks.  Such mid century liciousness:

We headed home and I started cooking.  I made red onion marmalade which is onions cooked down in wine and honey.  The end product is beyond delicious and will be on my cooking blog as soon as I can get around to it.  I also made savory shortbread with cheddar cheese and bacon.  Mr. Poe loves them but I’m not completely satisfied.  I was hoping for something a little puffier and chewier.  My last attempt at savory biscuits was pretty much a fail so I feel like I’m improving but stay tuned!  After dinner we got cleaned up and ready for bed.  It’s so nice to have a weekend day that isn’t crazy busy because of Lifecycle stuff.  Rufus is gonna be tired for a week and I had an awesome day!

Friday I came into work on Muni with Mr. Poe and went to the gym in the morning.  I went back for my spinning class mid day and thankfully it was completely uneventful.  Hooray!  After work I took Muni into Cole Valley and then went for a nice walk home.  I headed over to beautiful Oakhurst Lane which is a cruel set of stairs that head up Mt. Sutro.  It has gorgeous views on a clear day and is generally awesome.  Here they are:

These are the views on the way up:

I headed on Crestmont and noted goats!  These little guys are famous for their willingness to eat anything and are owned by an outfit called ‘Citygrazing’.  You can visit their site here.  So cute!:

Then I headed over to Tank Hill which has crazy beautiful views:

    Pretty Belgrave St:

I headed home and got cleaned up for dinner.  After we went to bed early.  It had been a very long week.

I continued on John Muir to the Great Highway and stopped for a pic of the coast:

I continued on the Great Highway and stopped at the foot of Sloat for a pic.  Last time I was here it had massive sand dunes blocking the view.  I guess somebody’s been doing some shoveling:

I continued on the Great Highway and went into Golden Gate Park at MLK and took that to Middle to Transverse to JFK to 8th to Cabrillo to McAllister to Parker to Golden Gate to Hyde to 8th to Folsom to Spear where I met up with Mr. Chris so I could retrieve the camera I’d left the night before and then I headed into work Main to Drumm to California to Sansome.

Mid day I headed home up Market to wait for a incoming houseguest.  When he did, we hung out and waited for Mr. Poe to come home.  Then we had dinner and I got cleaned up for bed.

Wednesday I came into work down Market street and went to the gym.  I headed home for lunch and then went and visited Mr. Chris and the ladies after work.  Here are the girls looking especially jolly:

On my way home, I managed to decapitate my headphones in my front wheel trying to get them on while riding.  Not a good move.  I was super late so I coughed down dinner and got ready for bed.

Tuesday I managed to get up and out of the house and I went for a nice ride before work.  I headed out Corbett to Portola to Woodside to Dewey to Taravel and down to the coast.  I came up the Great Highway and stopped at the Cliff House for some pics of the beach.  Gorgeous:

I continued up to Geary to 34th and up to the Palace of the Legion of Honor.  I got a pic of the gorgeous golf course surrounding the museum grounds:

Di Suvero’s Pax Jerusalemme has been in place since 1999 and doesn’t have a long list of fans and admirers.  But I like it.  It’s got such a great sense of volume and movement and thrust:

The Palace of the Legion of Honor getting ready for a party:

I headed down El Camino Del Mar to Lake where I stopped for pics of the fabulous neighborhood.  I love me some Seacliff:
