Friday I came into work Market to Laguna to Post to Kearny to Clay to Sansome. I headed home for lunch up Market and then headed down 18th to Castro to stop by the comic book store and then took 18th to Valencia to 19th to Folsom. I was coming down Folsom and was a little west of 6th when a cyclist about 100 feet ahead of me got doored. I kept it together and called 911, kept anybody from moving him until he was able to get up on his own and then dealt with the ambulance and police when they arrived. He was up and walking and talking and thought he was OK but the ambulance folks thought otherwise and he was in a neck brace and on the gurney almost immediately. He wasn’t wearing a helmet which, of course, is a huge disaster and I’m hoping he’s gonna be OK. Here’s the massive number or EMS guys getting him packaged for transit. Sadly, only one of the was hot:
This is a big contrast to the last medical emergency I witnessed where I totally panicked. It was on the Lifecycle two years ago and a rider had some kind of diabetic thing on day 5 just outside of Casmalia and just sort of fell over and was still clipped into his pedals on the side of the road when I came upon him. I didn’t have any idea what was going on or what to do and we couldn’t get a cell phone signal to call 911 and it was terrifying.
I stayed long enough to give a police report which may prove handy to the cyclist if and when it ends up in court. I continued on Folsom to 2nd to Market to Sansome and back into work. A little rattled but it’s gonna be OK.
